Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are the most common type of fracture secondary to osteoporosis. These fractures are associated with significant rates of morbidity and mortality and annual direct medical expenditures of more than $1 billion in the United States. This book presents a concise review of the diagnosis, management and treatment of vertebral compression fractures, discussing best practices for evaluation and radiographic diagnosis of vertebral compression fractures, as well as both non-operative and operative treatment options, including cement augmentation. Opening chapters discuss both normal bone physiology as well as the pathophysiology of osteoporotic bone, and the evaluation and biomechanics of VCF, both osteoporotic and pathologic. Examination, radiography and long-term sequelae of VCF are then presented. The bulk of the remainder of the book focuses on medical, non-operative and operative management strategies, including vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty cement augmentation, management of spinal deformity, VCF adjacent to previous spinal fusion, and sacral insufficiency fractures. A final chapter on future treatment strategies rounds out the presentation. Spinal Compression Fractures in Osteoporotic and Pathologic Bone is ideal for orthopaedic trauma, spine, and neurosurgeons. The book is also intended for endocrinologists, rheumatologists, interventional radiologists, physiatrists, anesthesiologists, primary care physicians, and other practitioners who manage and treat patients with osteoporosis.

The definitive guide to performing vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, and implant augmentation from national and international experts Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) result from trauma or pathologic weakening of the bone and are associated with conditions such as osteoporosis or malignancy. Worldwide, VCFs impact one in three women and one in eight men aged 50 and older, with more than 8.9 million fractures incurred annually. Copublished by Thieme and the Society of Interventional Radiology, Vertebral Augmentation: The Comprehensive Guide to Vertebroplasty, Kyphoplasty, and Implant Augmentation provides a practical, clinical discussion of these minimally invasive spine interventions. Written and edited by Douglas Beall along with associate editors Allan Brook, M. R. Chambers, Joshua Hirsch, Alexios Kelekis, Yong-Chul Kim, Scott Kreiner, and Kieran Murphy, this richly illustrated book presents a multidisciplinary and international perspective. It features contributions from renowned experts in interventional radiology, neurosurgery, pain medicine, and physiatry. This resource fills a gap in the literature, with extensive updates on a vast amount of new information and techniques that have been introduced during the past decade. Thirty-five chapters address treatment of spine fractures, starting with a history and introduction to vertebral augmentation, discussion of VCFs, patient assessments, physical exam findings, pain management, and much more. Key Features Procedural chapters cover vertebroplasty, sacroplasty, cervical and posterior arch augmentation, balloon kyphoplasty, and vertebral augmentation with implants and for challenging pathologies Special topics include radiation exposure and protection, post-procedure physical therapy, osteoporosis treatment, postural fatigue syndrome, the effect on morbidity and mortality, and cementoplasty outside the spine Treatment of complex cases are also discussed extensively, including chronic vertebral compression fractures, neoplastic vertebral compression fractures, instrumented spinal fusions, and severe benign and malignant fractures The final chapter features 16 subchapters from global masters of vertebral augmentation, with personal tips, tricks, and pearls they use in their own practices This is a must-have resource for interventional radiology, neurosurgery, interventional pain management, and orthopaedic surgery residents and fellows, as well as seasoned clinicians who wish to incorporate these procedures into practice.

Largely due to their capacity to provide immediate pain relief in osteoporotic compression fractures and neoplastic disease of the spine, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty have become popular techniques in recent years. These procedures require minimal incisions and can be performed without general anesthesia, which adds to their appeal. This is the first book to cover everything that is currently known about vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, including patient selection, operative techniques, complication avoidance, management, outcomes, and more! You will find extensive discussions of the role of vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty in acute fractures, non-osteoporotic pathological compression fractures, and burst fractures. A multidisciplinary panel of spine surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and interventional radiologists provide their unique perspectives, along with comparisons of techniques and potential complications to help you select the right procedure for a particular patient. Filling a significant gap in literature, this exceptional work provides a ''snapshot'' of these modern surgical techniques, with practical guidelines on using them to provide optimal patient care. It is a state-of-the-art resource for all informed spine surgeons, radiologists, and neurosurgeons. *Message from AANS and Thieme: Participants using this book to apply for CME credit now have until January 31, 2010 to complete and pass the Home Study Examination (available online from the AANS - see CME Credit Information page for more information). Endovascular intervention - using medication and devices introduced through catheters or microcatheters placed into the blood vessels through a percutaneous approach - has emerged as a relatively new minimally invasive approach to treat cerebrovascular disease and possibly intracranial neoplasms. This textbook provides a comprehensive review of principles pertinent to endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular diseases and intracranial tumors, with a detailed description of techniques for these procedures and periprocedural management strategies. Particular emphasis is placed on expert interpretation of the quality of evidence provided and implications for practice related to endovascular procedures. This will be essential reading for clinicians working in interventional neurology and cardiology, endovascular neurosurgery, vascular surgery and neuroradiology.
