The main goals of our program can be summarized as follows: (1) To design and build a helmet mounted display with commercially available components in order to demonstrate the proposed dual insertion display concept which will provide a very large field of view (FOV image). (2) To design and layout silicon on sapphire circuits which will be used in the Phase 2 work. (3) To examine the issues associated with the wireless communication of images. The goal of the Phase 2 program is to replace the commercially available low resolution displays of the Phase 1 HMD prototype with ultrathin silicon on sapphire based active matrix addressed liquid crystal displays (AMLCDs). As explained in the following sections of the proposal, the use of ultrathin silicon on sapphire (UTSOS) technology provides some fundamental advantages which gives us the technological edge when competing with other display companies. The final HMD will receive image data via wireless transmission channels. Color will be generated using Textronix color shutters.

Wide field of view, high resolution, detailed visual displays are cruical for the effective simulation of complex air-to-air and air-to-ground combat environments. Current dome and dodecahedron systems are far to costly and lack the combination of required capabilities. The Air Force Human Resources Laboratory (AFHRL) is currently developing a fiber optic helmet mounted display (FOHMD) system which has the potential for filling these demanding requirements. The breadboard FOHMD, built through a Canadian cost-sharing contract with CAE Electronics, displays a head-slaved high resolution area of interest surrounded by a low resolution background in color. The instantaneous field of view is comparable to the view available to a pilot when wearing an Air Force helmet. Four image generation channels and projectors are used to generate individual displays for each eye. The imagery is piped to the helmet via coherent fiber optic bundles. This system is a valuable research tool for studying many of the issues associated with helmet mounted displays such as image stability, resolution/brightness/field of view trade-offs, and visual perception/fatigue.

An optimized optical link helmet mounted display (OOLHMD) system designed to satisfy requirements for a large-field-of-view, large-exit-pupil, high-resolution, helmet-mounted visually-coupled display device is described. The history and development of the basic concept is traced, and principal design considerations and requirements constituting the basis of the selected OOLHMD configuration are identified. Advantages and disadvantages of several alternative designs are also considered, and a comprehensive discussion of the benefits to be realized through use and application of the OOLHMD concept in lieu of displays permanently mounted within an aircraft cockpit is given. This report details the development of a fiber-optic-coupled helmet-mounted display. A working breadboard model has been developed. A computer-generated image projected from a light valve is relayed to the input of a large format coherent fiber-optic bundle. The fiber-optic bundle transfers the image to a set of helmet-mounted optics which display the imagery via two in-line, wide-angle infinity displays. The helmet position and attitude are sensed and used to control the image content. Studies were also conducted on requirement for eye-slaved control of image content.

In the past much of the effort expended in the development of Helmet-Mounted Displays (HMD) was directed toward the goal of displaying high resolution video over a wide angular field of view. These systems were not entirely acceptable from an operational standpoint due to excessive weight, size and a number of adverse visual effects related to viewing two competing, high resolution images. Recent studies at the USAF Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory (AFAMRL) have been directed at the introduction of a flexible fiber optics bundle. (FFOB) to relay alphanumeric/symbolic information from a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) located off the helmet in order to provide Head-Up Display (HUD) equivalent display information. This approach results in less weight and size, the potential for increased brightness and the removal of high voltage from the helmet. In addition to these improved hardware characteristics several visual problems are avoided by this simple configuration. This paper will examine the rationale for such a design approach as well as present results laboratory studies to assess the effect of FFOB fiber density on symbol legibility for a Helmet-Mounted Head-Up Display (HMHUD).
