Mit dem Band III des Verzeichnisses der Han-Darstellungen sowie mit den jetzt vorgelegten Erganzungen legt Kate Finsterbusch die Beschreibungen von ca. 2700 Darstellungen auf Reliefs und Wandmalereien aus Grabern und Schreinen der Han-Zeit sowie Darstellungen im Han-Stil, die in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten in China publiziert worden sind, vor. Band IV enthalt das Bildmaterial dazu, soweit es reproduzierbar ist. Die Arbeit vermittelt einen Uberblick uber die verstreut veroffentlichten Darstellungen und liefert einen Beitrag zur weiteren Erforschung Han-zeitlicher Ikonographie.

Das Buch ist eine Fortsetzung der 1966/1971 erschienenen Bande I und II. Es enthalt ein Verzeichnis mit detaillierten Beschreibungen von Darstellungen auf Stein- und Ziegelreliefs, Steingravierungen und Wandmalereien der Han-Zeit und im Han-Stil, die seit 1972 durch chinesische Monographien, Fundberichte und Aufsatze in chinesischen Fachzeitschriften bekannt geworden sind. Das Verzeichnis umfasst mehr als 2500 Darstellungen. Die Materialsammlung wurde 1997 abgeschlossen. Beigegeben ist ein Verzeichnis der Inschriften, der Fundorte und der datierten Reliefs. Der Motivindex im zweiten Teil der Arbeit mit uber 11000 Eintragungen berucksichtigt archaologisch-kunsthistorisches Material zur Ikonographie sowie kulturgeschichtliches Material zur Sachkunde der Han-Zeit.Vorgesehen ist weiterhin die Veroffentlichung eines Abbildungsbandes zum Verzeichnis der Han-Darstellungen.

The lead chapter presents a parallel biography of two ancient physicians, Pien Ch’üeh and Ts’ang Kung, providing a transition between the founding of the Han dynasty and its heyday under Wu. The account of Liu P’i is framed by the great rebellion he led in 154 B.C. and the remaining chapters trace the careers of court favorites, depict the tribulations of an ill-fated general, discuss the Han’s greatest enemy, the Hsiung-nu, and provide accounts of two great generals who fought them. The final memoir is structured around memorials by two strategists who attempted to lead Emperor Wu into negotiations with the Hsiung-nu, a policy that Ssu-ma Ch’ien himself supported.
