A trilingual series (in Dutch, French, and English) dealing with the persecution and deportation of Jews and gypsies from the transit camp in Mechelen to Auschwitz between 1942-44. The prisoners had been arrested in Belgium and in northern France. Vol. 1 presents a historical overview, by Steinberg and Schram, of the racist and antisemitic persecutions in Belgium (especially in Antwerp), and in northern France, and relates the history of each transport. Vols. 2-3 present photographs of 18,522 of the 25,259 deportees. Only ca. 1,000 of the photographs represent gypsies. Vol. 4 contains lists of the names of the victims and biographical information concerning their fate. The Routledge Handbook of Far-Right Extremism in Europe is a timely and important study of the far and extreme right-wing phenomenon across a broad spectrum of European countries, and in relation to a selected list of core areas and topics such as anti-gender, identitarian politics, hooliganism, and protest mobilisation. The handbook deals with the rise and the developments of far-right movements, parties, and organisations across diverse countries in Europe. Crucially, it discusses the main topics and issues pertaining to far-right ideology and positioning, and considers how central and less central actors of far-right milieus have fared within the given context. Agressief en zelfdestructief gedrag stelt menig ouder, leraar en hulpverlener voor een dilemma. Of het nu gaat om geweld, woede-uitbarstingen, liegen, stelen of om extreme angst, dwang, schoolverzuim of internetverslaving, met regelmaat wordt gepleit voor een ‘hardere’ aanpak, maar escalatie ligt op de loer. Een effectief alternatief is te vinden in de basisprincipes van ‘geweldloos verzet’ waarin vastberaden verzet (zonder dreigen en straffen) en positieve aanwezigheid (zonder toegeven) worden gecombineerd. Gesteund door hun netwerk leren gezagsdragers om zowel hun gezag als de relatie met het kind op een positieve manier te herstellen. Van (on)macht naar kracht! Dit boek opent met een bespreking van Gandhi’s methode van geweldloos verzet en de toepassing daarvan binnen de context van het gezin. Inzicht in escalatieprocessen tussen opvoeders en kinderen kan helpen bij het voorkomen daarvan. Het boek bevat een praktische handleiding met heldere en concrete instructies voor ouders. Daarmee kunnen zij de principes van geweldloos verzet direct in praktijk brengen. Verder wordt aandacht besteed aan specifieke thema’s als geweld tegen broers en zusjes, kinderen die het gezin ‘terroriseren’, het belang van samenwerking tussen ouders en leerkrachten en de toepassing van geweldloos verzet in de gemeenschap. Deze tweede druk bevat een geheel herziene handleiding met enkele nieuwe interventies. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog verzetten de Nederlandse bisschoppen zich tegen het nationaalsocialisme, vanuit de overtuiging dat het principieel onverenigbaar is met het christelijk geloof. Onder leiding van mgr. J.P. Huibers verzette het bisdom Haarlem zich tegen pogingen om het nationaalsocialistische gedachtengoed onder zijn gelovigen te verspreiden. Ook werden maatregelen genomen om hen die de NSB en haar mantelorganisaties steunden de sacramenten te ontzeggen. In de praktijk van de dagelijkse zielzorg stuitten geestelijken op vele problemen en uitdagingen: van het verlenen van absolutie tijdens bombardementen tot het kunnen blijven uitreiken van de communie. Niet zelden kwamen zij regelrecht in botsing met de Duitse bezetter. Vele geestelijken en enkele broeders belandden in de cel of werden naar concentratiekampen getransporteerd. Twee priesters en een broeder overleefden dat niet. Door de hongerwinter en het hardere optreden van de bezetter namen de problemen tegen het einde van de oorlog sterk toe. Dit boek beschrijft hoe het bisdom Haarlem, dat bijna heel West Nederland omvatte, zich staande hield. Hoe ging het om met de Duitse bezetting, welke rol speelde het in het verzet en hoe kon het de gelovigen blijven stichten en steunen in een van de moeilijkste periodes in onze geschiedenis?

Kersten presented himself after the war as a resistance hero who convinced Himmler to save countless people from mass murder. Kawashima Yoshiko, a gender fluid Manchu princess, spied for the Japanese secret police in China, and was mythologized by the Japanese as a heroic combination of Mata Hari and Joan of Arc. Friedrich Weinreb was a Hasidic Jew in Holland who took large amounts of money from fellow Jews in an imaginary scheme to save them from deportation, while in fact betraying some of them to the German secret police. Sentenced after the war as a traitor and a con artist, he is still regarded by supporters as the 'Dutch Dreyfus'. All three figures have been vilified and mythologized, out of a never-ending need, Ian Buruma argues, to see history, and particularly war, and above all World War II, as a neat tale of angels and devils. This book is the first in-depth, ethnographic study of the Dutch punk scene. It questions the artificial boundaries of subcultural research, calling for a critical analysis of the distinctions drawn between subcultural and everyday lives, and between localised and globalised subcultures. The everyday experiences of punk are framed within the mobile and connected global subculture of which they are a part. It traces its emergence in the 1970s and its development through to 2010, with chapters that map Dutch punk historically and spatially. Further chapters explore the meanings and practices attached to punk by its participants before focusing in particular on the political affiliations of punks. This book argues for an approach to social research that recognises the ‘messiness’ and the ‘connectedness’ of punk and of the social world.
