Agressief en zelfdestructief gedrag stelt menig ouder, leraar en hulpverlener voor een dilemma. Of het nu gaat om geweld, woede-uitbarstingen, liegen, stelen of om extreme angst, dwang, schoolverzuim of internetverslaving, met regelmaat wordt gepleit voor een ‘hardere’ aanpak, maar escalatie ligt op de loer. Een effectief alternatief is te vinden in de basisprincipes van ‘geweldloos verzet’ waarin vastberaden verzet (zonder dreigen en straffen) en positieve aanwezigheid (zonder toegeven) worden gecombineerd. Gesteund door hun netwerk leren gezagsdragers om zowel hun gezag als de relatie met het kind op een positieve manier te herstellen. Van (on)macht naar kracht! Dit boek opent met een bespreking van Gandhi’s methode van geweldloos verzet en de toepassing daarvan binnen de context van het gezin. Inzicht in escalatieprocessen tussen opvoeders en kinderen kan helpen bij het voorkomen daarvan. Het boek bevat een praktische handleiding met heldere en concrete instructies voor ouders. Daarmee kunnen zij de principes van geweldloos verzet direct in praktijk brengen. Verder wordt aandacht besteed aan specifieke thema’s als geweld tegen broers en zusjes, kinderen die het gezin ‘terroriseren’, het belang van samenwerking tussen ouders en leerkrachten en de toepassing van geweldloos verzet in de gemeenschap. Deze tweede druk bevat een geheel herziene handleiding met enkele nieuwe interventies. Nieuw is ook de bijlage met een aangepaste handleiding voor gezinnen met kinderen en/of opvoeders met een verstandelijke beperking. Het boek is geschreven voor therapeuten, hulpverleners en opvoeders die in werk of gezin geconfronteerd worden met gewelddadig en zelfdestructief gedrag van kinderen. Het biedt inzicht in processen die dit gedrag in stand houden en praktische handvatten voor het doorbreken hiervan. De auteur Haim Omer is hoogleraar psychologie aan de Universiteit van Tel Aviv, Israël. Throughout human history, the relationships of individuals and groups have been disrupted by what the authors sum up as "demonization," the attribution of basic destructive qualities to the other or to forces within the self. Demonization results in constant suspicion and blame, a systematic disregard of positive events, pressure to eradicate the putative negative persons or forces, and a growing readiness to engage in escalating conflict. Richly illustrated with 24 case stories, this book explores the psychological processes involved in demonization and their implications for the effort to effect change in relationships, psychotherapy, and beyond the office or clinic in the daily lives of families, organizations, and societies. Recent popular psychology--the authors argue--has tended to encourage demonization. An appropriate alternative to this view is known as the "tragic view": Suffering is inevitable in life; negative outcomes are a result of a confluence of factors over which one has only a very limited control; there is no possibility of reading into the hidden "demonic" layers of the other's mind; the other's actions, like our own, are multiply motivated; escalation is a tragic development rather than the result of an evil "master plan"; and finally, skills for promoting acceptance and reducing escalation are necessary for diminishing interpersonal suffering. The authors describe and illustrate a series of these skills both for psychotherapy and for personal use. Finally, they lay out an approach to consolation and acceptance, the neglect of which they attribute to the dominance of demonic views. This is the first volume of the final reports of the Mission of the K.U.Leuven in Dayr al-Barsha (Middle Egypt). It contains the publication (in colour photographs and line drawings in colour) of three small tombs probably dated immediately after the Unification of Egypt in the reign of pharaoh Mentuhotep II (XIth Dynasty). After an introduction on the long-term research strategy of the Dayr al-Barsha project it first offers an account of the setting of the tombs and of earlier research carried out there. This is followed by a detailed account of each of the three monuments, including a detailed philological commentary of the texts. These include two autobiographical inscriptions, of which one has received little attention, while the other is here published in full for the first time. The scant archaeological remains found in the tombs are also dealt with in detail. The two tombs are contemporary with that of the nomarch Ahanakht I, and offers a rare insight into the functioning of a nomarchal court in the early Middle Kingdom. The last chapter offers an analysis of this, and also advances a hypothesis on the way king Mentuhotep succeeded in integrating the Middle Egyptian provincial elites into the newly united kingdom.
