Raising an almost perfect pet does not happen by accident. When people acquire pets, they may not be certain about what to expect, but few anticipate the problems that can result--including expenses, health care issues and bad behaviors--or the emotional investment that comes with a true commitment to another living being. Being prepared, having realistic expectations, and raising pets with desired outcomes can make the experience one to be treasured. This handbook is a complete guide to dog and cat care aimed at pet owners wishing to raise healthy, happy pets and to foster a lasting, loving relationship with their four-legged friends.

This book (Working Group) provides you with the thorough descriptions and positive attributes of these breeds, including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors, and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known, predisposed hereditary health syndromes for these breeds. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for these breeds and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small-animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life, and I am further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed, with aerodynamic bodies consisting of a small head, deep chest, narrow waist, and large leg muscles. On the other hand, dachshunds take their name from German words meaning ?badger dog, ? and they use their long nose, long body, and short legs to both track, enter, and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspiration for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically, references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various veterinary medical texts and journals, such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular, and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, has been researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposed information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club, Canine Health Foundation, and the Kennel Club of England report over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. During the writing of my first book in 1983, less than fifty hereditary issues were able to be predicted or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome; DNA tests; metabolic testing, including blood tests and urine testing; and phenotypic examinations, such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified veterinary ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed-related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners, and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.

The fourth edition of Clinical Medicine of the Dog and Cat remains the most extensively illustrated and practical small animal veterinary textbook on the market. It continues and expands on the revolutionary problem-based approach of the previous three editions, with more than 1,100 clinical color photographs, diagrams, and tables. The book is divided into five color-coded sections—General Approach, Diagnostic Techniques, Disease of Specific Organ Systems, Multisystemic Disorders, and Elements of Therapy. For this edition: Case studies are integrated within the relevant chapters for ease of reference The first section on common medical problems now includes abdominal distension, peripheral edema, proteinuria, regurgitation, and seizures Chapters on thoracic and abdominal radiographs are now included in a unique new section on Diagnostic Techniques, encouraging an integrated learning approach The third section contains detailed medical information covering most organ systems, with several chapters completely rewritten and others comprehensively updated to include additional text and images Additional endoscopic, radiographic, CT, and MRI images are included alongside clinical photographs; very few veterinary textbooks have such a rich emphasis on photographs Each section has a limited number of recommended updated references The practical information is presented with text, tables, and algorithms, while each chapter is arranged to provide the definition of each disorder, its clinical features, the differential diagnoses, the diagnostic methodology, and the treatment and prognosis. The formatting has been improved to make this textbook easy to read and comprehend. The busy veterinarian or student is thus provided with a readily available resource of important clinical information in a clear, brief manner. Written by board-certified experts, the topics are carefully selected to make this a valuable resource for veterinary students as well as for general practitioners and small animal interns.

A Guide To Canine And Feline Orthopaedic Surgery written by Hamish Denny and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-04-30 with Medical categories.

This successful book, first published in 1980 and now in its fourth edition, provides an authoritative guide for busy practitioners trying to keep pace with current trends in small animal orthopaedic surgery. In this new edition Hamish Denny and Steven Butterworth have retained the same practical approach but have completely rewritten and updated the book to provide a comprehensive review of orthopaedic and spinal conditions in the dog and cat. The illustrations have also undergone a major overhaul and the many line drawings are now combined with photographs and radiographs to clarify diagnostic and surgical techniques. Although the size of the book has increased, its regional approach to problems still enables the reader to use it as a rapid reference guide. It will prove an invaluable source of information for veterinary practitioners diagnosing and treating orthopaedic and spinal problems, while postgraduate students taking further qualifications in orthopaedics will find a sound basis for their studies and further reading provided here.
