La época actual se caracteriza por la intensificación y el aumento en la heterogeneidad de los desplazamientos. Esos movimientos han tenido y tienen diferentes causas, motivaciones y duraciones: dentro de una amplia gama de prácticas de movilidad puede distinguirse aquellas vinculadas a las migraciones laborales o provocadas por fenómenos naturales, hambrunas y conflictos políticos o religiosos, hasta aquellas relacionadas con motivos de estudio, empresariales, científicos y de turismo. Frente a esta situación, algunos estudios inscriptos en las Ciencias Sociales han revisado los conceptos y los métodos tradicionales, y han elaborado nuevos enfoques analíticos para examinar problemáticas asociadas al viaje, al traslado y al movimiento. La Geografía no ha escapado a esta situación. Este libro reúne diversos estudios que abordan el papel de los desplazamientos en la configuración de lugares en tiempos pasados y presentes. En el marco de los procesos de desterritorialización y reterritorialización del capital, la reflexión sobre las prácticas de los viajeros, de los turistas y de los migrantes, ofrece elementos para construir una Geografía Cultural que encuentre así sus bases en el desplazamiento y no sólo en el sedentarismo o, en todo caso, en la yuxtaposición de ambas prácticas, donde, en términos de James Clifford, importan no sólo las raíces sino también las rutas.
