Este libro es la primera edición chilena de la obra de Charles Darwin cuyo título original fue Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries Visited During the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Round the World Under the Command of Capt. Fitz Roy, R.N. En sucesivas ediciones el libro se ha titulado Viaje de un naturalista alrededor del mundo o también, más brevemente, El viaje del Beagle. Aquí entregamos los siete capítulos que se refieren a Chile, que constituyen un tercio del total. El texto de estos capítulos es el mismo que entregara Darwin hace 150 años. Se ha recurrido a la traducción de J. H. Hubert que ocupara Joaquín Gil para la edición de Ateneo de Buenos Aires de 1942, la que nos pareció muy correcta haciéndole solo algunos cambios menores. Hemos agregado un Prólogo y Notas, esencialmente referidos a nuestro país; comentarios históricos o anecdóticos, y también notas referidas a la geología, flora y fauna de Chile. Como esta edición está dirigida a un público amplio, no hay en ella intención erudita. El Índice ha sido hecho especialmente para esta edición con bastante detalle, de manera que el lector encuentre nombres de lugares, flora, fauna y geología que le sean familiares, indicando, a veces, sus nombres actuales, diferentes a los dados por Darwin.Casi cien ilustraciones acompañan el texto y, entre ellas, hay pinturas, grabados y dibujos de la época, cuyos autores fueron los artistas o tripulantes de la Beagle, así como otros artistas y viajeros que recorrieron Chile. Hemos incluido algunos valiosos documentos originales, que se encuentran en Inglaterra, y algunos en Chile, muchos de ellos inéditos.

In 1993 and 1994, two Rapid Assessment Program teams conducted biological surveys in the Cordillera del Cóndor between Ecuador and Peru, one of the largest intact regions of Andean lower montane forest. This book presents the results of their surveys. The great topographic and geological complexity of this region, combined with a climate of year-round high humidity, have resulted in very high plant species diversity. This diversity of habitats and species with restricted distributions makes the Cóndor an important refuge for many taxa.
