Los autores aquí reunidos ---John Randolph Tucker, Louis y Alexander Agassiz, E. George Squier, James Orton y Adolph Bandelier--- se diferencian por su formación y objetivos de los llamados “viajeros del Mar” (marinos mercantes y balleneros), que fueron los que predominaron durante la primera mitad del XIX. No fueron visitantes de paso: las temporadas que transcurrieron en el Perú están anudadas a la trama de su historia republicana. Las exploraciones de los ríos amazónicos efectuadas por el almirante Tucker, por ejemplo, sirvieron para integrar esa enorme región al resto del país. E.G. Squier y A. "The two case studies presented in this book represent two distinct types of imagining by two diametrically different groups: literate, and in some cases erudite Europeans, and a vanquished native nobility. The former endeavoured to make sense of Spain's (and Portugal's) 'marvellous possessions' in the New World with the limited conceptual tools at their disposal, the latter to construct a colonial identity based on their shared ancestral memory while incorporating elements from the even more wondrous Hispanic culture that had overwhelmed them. There were, of course, multiple misunderstandings and misinterpretations. Yet for the Spanish such distortions were a matter of government and religion, rectifiable in the fullness of time, whether by evangelisation or the relentless application of civil and canon law.

En ella se despliega el talento narrativo de Marcoy, su viva y empática curiosidad frente a los más diversos tipos humanos, las costumbres, los monumentos, del mundo andino. Y después en capítulos no menos memorables, relata su larga odisea por la floresta, aporta datos absolutamente novedosos sobre las etnias y culturas selváticas, describe plantas y animales, y se maravilla ante la riqueza de ese universo.
