Surveys suggest that around one third of all adult women will at some point in their life experience abuse perpetrated by an intimate male partner. In recent years a number of 'integrated responses' to domestic violence have been developed which are coordinated, appropriate, consistent responses aimed at enhancing victim safety, reducing secondary victimisation and holding abusers accountable for their violence. An increasingly important part of integrated responses is the delivery of interventions for male perpetrators of violence. In this book contributions come from those working with victims of domestic violence, from within the criminal justice system and integrated response programs. They describe and discuss the provision of programs and services that are designed to reduce the risk of domestic violence amongst known perpetrators. Outcome data, theoretical and clinical issues relevant to program delivery are discussed in detail.Domestic Violence - Working With Men provides a timely resource in the development of programs and services to reduce the risk of known perpetrators committing further acts of violence towards women. This accessible text takes a multi-disciplinary approach to exploring issues surrounding domestic violence. It draws on contemporary research findings, policy developments, innovative practice and case studies to explore new directions in professional and voluntary sector responses to domestic violence. Centred on the United Kingdom, but located in a context of global change, the book discusses and critically evaluates new criminal justice and multi-agency initiatives such as domestic violence courts and risk assessment conferences, as well as assessing how far these initiatives improve the safety of women and children. Harne and Radford aim to disseminate ideas about best practice in relation to dealing with this sensitive and still controversial issue. They use real-life case studies from professionals, including the police, health services and Women’s Aid, and are inclusive of the experiences of a wide range of survivors, in order to enable an understanding of the need for appropriate responses, depending on different survivor needs. Tackling Domestic Violence provides an informed background for professionals in the police, probation, health and social care services, the legal system and voluntary sector with a remit to respond to domestic violence. It is also highly relevant to those undertaking courses on domestic violence at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

This book presents a variety of socio-legal perspectives on issues of domestic violence and abuse. Focussing on contemporary research and practice developments in policing, law, statutory and voluntary sectors, the contributors to this volume cover a vast spectrum of initiatives and professional expertise concerned variably with protection, prevention and intervention priorities. The challenges of “joined up” thinking across these perspectives are apparent as the varied definitions, underpinning ideologies, terminologies, the profile of the victim/survivor’s voice and identified gaps in service provision appearing in this book illustrate. As a reflection on the current economic climate, some of the perspectives presented necessarily compete rather than complement each other, an issue the volume highlights and addresses. Achieving a broader understanding of these issues and insights into a range of activity in this context is vital for both the practitioner and academic alike, whatever their perspective./div

Domestic violence is a serious social problem that is heart-breaking to each and every victim who experiences the abuse. However, it has hitherto been depicted in a misleading manner, by portraying men as always the perpetrators and women always the victims. This book is packed with factual evidence that shows that men are also victims of domestic violence perpetrated by their wives or female partners, and in high numbers. It thus dispels this old misleading stereotype and establishes that domestic violence is not a gender issue as heretofore portrayed, but a social issue and one capable of being perpetrated by either partner in an intimate relationship. TRUTH AND PREJUDICE: Mens Experiences of Domestic Violence is based on a review of research findings from around the world covering Australia, Canada, China, South Africa, Uganda, United Kingdom and United States - confirming the reality of domestic violence against men by their wives or female partners. The book unveils the truth head-on, and lays bare the prejudice that male victims are subjected to by those responsible for responding to domestic violence victims. Divided into four chapters - each examining a key issue of mens experiences - the subjects under discussion are: the prevalence and extent of this abuse against men; detrimental impact of this on them the disparity in support/service provision and biased response to male victims - concluding with an overview of the main arguments and recommendations for a way forward. The book is comprehensive in its examination of these issues and jargon-free, thus capable of appealing to all those (men or women) interested in the unbiased portrayal of domestic violence in our societies.

In an effort to provide "distinctively new" research in victimology, Hoyle and Young (both of the Centre for Criminological Research, U. of Oxford, UK) present eight chapters by emerging and established academics. The contributions can be characterized as having two separate focuses: the challenging of stereotypical notions of the victim and examinations of criminal justice responses. Male victims of domestic violence and rape, victims of corporate crime, and the victims of IRA "punishment beatings" are examined. Concepts of restorative justice and victim participation in the criminal justice system are also explored. Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
