En Miseria de la teoría E. P. Thompson cuestiona las posiciones de Louis Althusser y el marxismo estructural. Para Thompson, la concepción estructuralista de la historia de Althusser, como un "proceso sin sujeto", no solo condenaba al olvido la experiencia concreta de autoempoderamiento colectivo de los sectores subalternos, sino que además concedía un nuevo aliento teórico al estalinismo ideológico que, en su opinión, seguía atravesando las tesis y la práctica del Partido Comunista francés. Sin embargo, más allá de la disputa con el estructuralismo y con Althusser –señala Pablo Semán–, "Thompson dejó una lección para quien quiera hacer de las disciplinas de las ciencias sociales una práctica viva. El dato no habla solo, lo sabemos. Pero la fe errada del que se halla poseedor de la teoría definitiva, hija de la falta de sentido de la singularidad y del contraste que revela el carácter situado del investigador, transforma la investigación en un sistema de respuestas deductivas. Por eso, allí donde se insinúa la omnipotencia del teórico puro hay que dejarse atravesar por lo real, incluyendo en ese atravesamiento al otro, que también tiene su teoría y siempre, siempre, siempre obliga a rehacer nuestros universales tan precarios".

En el curso de la crisis de los años treinta, la izquierda española osciló entre la «contención» democrático-liberal (burguesa) y la revolución democrático-socialista (obrera-campesina). Los protagonistas de esta última fueron ante todo los anarcosindicalistas de la CNT, y los comunistas antiestalinistas que confluyeron en el POUM. Aunque minoritario, este corriente tuvo un papel destacado en los acontecimientos entre 1934 y 1937. Sus criticas a la URSS de Stalin le convirtieron en la principal víctima de la represión (con la connivencia de la derecha republicana) cuya víctima más significativa fue Andreu Nin. Éste fue un emblemático drama social y político que todavía sigue provocando un intenso y extenso debate, vertido en una producción bibliográfica excepcional... Con estos «retratos», su autor ha tratado de ofrecer un cuadro vivo y muy personal de una selección de poumistas significativos. Aparte de sus figuras más conocidas (Nin, Maurín, Andrade, Gorkin, Orwell), pero también de otras que no lo fueron tanto (Bonet, Rey, García Banús, Arquer, Rovira), sin olvidar a los voluntarios extranjeros (Landau, Low, Peret), para concluir con los exponentes más señalados de los años setenta. Son retratos muy personales, escritos desde la proximidad y con un prisma generacional intermedio, o sea de la generación del 68 a la que el autor pertenece y es reconocido. Están hechos con una pretensión polémica y divulgadota, pensando sobre todo en los jóvenes de ahora que descubrieron el POUM viendo Tierra y Libertad de Ken Loach, leyendo a George Orwell o a Trotsky, cuando no a través de sus detractores. En cierta medida se trata de una historia de la aventura del POUM que retrocede hacia los orígenes y se prolonga hasta las controversias y aportaciones más recientes.

Through newly unearthed texts virtually unknown in Andean studies, Indians and Mestizos in the "Lettered City" highlights the Andean intellectual tradition of writing in their long-term struggle for social empowerment and questions the previous understanding of the "lettered city" as a privileged space populated solely by colonial elites. Rarely acknowledged in studies of resistance to colonial rule, these writings challenged colonial hierarchies and ethnic discrimination in attempts to redefine the Andean role in colonial society. Scholars have long assumed that Spanish rule remained largely undisputed in Peru between the 1570s and 1780s, but educated elite Indians and mestizos challenged the legitimacy of Spanish rule, criticized colonial injustice and exclusion, and articulated the ideas that would later be embraced in the Great Rebellion in 1781. Their movement extended across the Atlantic as the scholars visited the seat of the Spanish empire to negotiate with the king and his advisors for social reform, lobbied diverse networks of supporters in Madrid and Peru, and struggled for admission to religious orders, schools and universities, and positions in ecclesiastic and civil administration. Indians and Mestizos in the "Lettered City" explores how scholars contributed to social change and transformation of colonial culture through legal, cultural, and political activism, and how, ultimately, their significant colonial critiques and campaigns redefined colonial public life and discourse. It will be of interest to scholars and students of colonial history, colonial literature, Hispanic studies, and Latin American studies.
