First issued in 1950 under the title "Consort of Taste, " the reappearance of this book is heralded by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as "right and proper. It was a pioneering study when it came out; now, after general evaluation of matters of Victorian art and architecture has changed so rapidly, it can with confidence be called a classic."The book discusses both strange and familiar aspects of the Early and High Victorian decades, bringing to light such important but little-known figures as: Anna Jameson, G. F. Waagen, Sir Francis Palgrave, William Bell Scott, and Sir Charles and Lady Eastlake. Steegman's major discovery, however, was Elizabeth Eastlake, a regular contributor to the "Quarterly Review" (from which much of the book's material has been taken) and an astute commentator on events of the day. She figures prominently in the book "because she so well typifies that upper middle-class society, living chiefly on earned incomes, which contrived to keep one foot in the intellectual and the other in the fashionable camp, and which did so much to form Victorian culture."In an attempt to establish what was considered good or bad by critical and intelligent minds of the day, and why it was so considered, the book covers the influence of the German Nazarene taste on England; the efforts of Prince Albert to promote historical and literary wall painting and "serious moral art" (the Italian primitives, Cranach, Overbeck, Dyce, and Augustus Egg); the Government Schools of Design; collectors and the "new connoisseurship." "Now," concludes Pevsner, "if on all these enterprises and the Arundel Society prints and the [Great Exhibition] of 1851 and so much else John Steegman tells us are as much as need be known and tells it so well and knowledgeably, it must be remembered that the specialists' books which we now have were all written later." Thus the book remains an original, entertaining, and objective account of taste in the Victorian era.

Victorian Vulgarity written by Susan David Bernstein and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-05 with Literary Criticism categories.

Originally describing language use and class position, vulgarity became, over the course of the nineteenth century, a word with wider social implications. Variously associated with behavior, the possession of wealth, different races, sexuality and gender, the objects displayed in homes, and ways of thinking and feeling, vulgarity suggested matters of style, taste, and comportment. This collection examines the diverse ramifications of vulgarity in the four areas where it was most discussed in the nineteenth century: language use, changing social spaces, the emerging middle classes, and visual art. Exploring the dynamics of the term as revealed in dictionaries and grammars; Mayhew's London Labour and the London Poor; fiction by Dickens, Eliot, Gissing, and Trollope; essays, journalism, art, and art reviews, the contributors bring their formidable analytical skills to bear on this enticing and divisive concept. Taken together, these essays urge readers to consider the implications of vulgarity's troubled history for today's writers, critics, and artists.

The Victorian period was one in which the minor arts, as distinct from the fine arts, reflected vividly, often with delightful humor, the customs and manners, clothes, recreations, entertainments and popular music of the day. The simple pottery ornaments of cottage and farmhouse had a quaintness that now makes them eagerly sought after by collectors. The elegant fashion plates and decorative title-pages of popular music not only offered scope for the brilliant gifts of now forgotten lithographers, but held a mirror to the social life of the world of Dickens, Thackeray and Trollope. Valentine cards expressed both the sentiment and joie de vivre that broke through the traditional solemnity of the Victorian family circle. Children delighted in toy theatres, and created gems of needlework in samplers which now command fantastic prices. All these subjects are assessed and illustrated in this book, which also rescues from the past some often forgotten examples of botanical, zoological and ornithological illustration which may come as an artistic revelation to naturalists today. By contrast there are some entertaining examples of popular art such as American 'cabinet' photographs of well-known actresses, the naive engravings of famous crimes of the period, a fascinating series of the original illustrations of Sherlock Holmes, and some of the earliest (and exceedingly rare) cigarette cards, including a pair to one in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, which is now valued at $30,000.
