New in Paperback 2004. Probably the most comprehensive work on the American art song ever available, this book considers the lives and contributions of 144 significant composers in the field, including many for whom information has been extremely scarce. Most composers' entries consist of a biographical sketch; a brief discussion of his or her song writing characteristics (with emphasis on performers' concerns); a partial or complete listing of annotated songs; recording information; and the composer's individual bibliography. Song annotations include poet, publisher, date of composition (when known), voice type, range, duration, tempo indication, mood, subject matter, vocal style, special difficulties, general impression, artists who have recorded the song, and any other pertinent information. Thirty composers whose contributions are deemed of lesser import are summarized in brief essays. Appendixes include a supplement of recommended songs; a listing of American song anthologies and their contents; and the most recent information regarding publishers cited in the guide. There is also a general discography, a general bibliography, and indexes for both titles and poets. Documenting the most important 110 years in the development of American art song, this book is an indispensable tool for singers, teachers, coaches, accompanists, and libraries.

This is the diary of Henrietta St. Felix (born 1864) of the Victorian music act "The St. Felix Sisters". Henrietta kept this diary for the entirety of the sisters' epic European tour from 1888-1889. The sisters traveled extensively across Western Europe, performing at many of the premier venues of the day. They toured England, Germany, Belgium, Holland, France, Bohemia, Austria, Hungary, Scotland, and Ireland. Henrietta recorded their tour stops, sightseeing excursions, and much more. At times, she gives her opinions on the locals, such as this note on Rotterdam: "The streets are very crooked and there seems to be nothing but canals and bridges all over the city. It is very Dutch in their way of living and the language is very ugly and the people dress so very strange and old-fashioned." This diary provides a fascinating look at the tour of three young, performing women in the late 1880s. Their adventure was surely grander than most people today live to experience.

The Choral Foundation Of The Chapel Royal Dublin Castle written by David Michael O'Shea and has been published by Boydell & Brewer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-23 with categories.

The first investigation into the choral foundation of the Chapel Royal, Dublin Castle. The Chapel Royal, Dublin Castle, was the place of worship of the British monarch's representative in Ireland from 1814 until the inception of the Irish Free State in 1922. It was founded and maintained by the joint efforts of church and state, and thus its history provides valuable insights into how the relationship between religion and politics shaped Irish society and identity. The Dublin Chapel was established in imitation of the Chapel Royal of St James's Palace, London, and was served by a staff of clergy and musicians. Its musical foundation was a formal and independent entity, with its own personnel and performance traditions. Its distinctive repertoire included music from the English and Irish cathedral traditions, as well as works written by composers associated directly with the Chapel. This study investigates the Chapel's constitution, liturgy and music through an examination of previously unexplored primary material. Discussion of the circumstances of the Chapel's founding and its governance structures situates the institution in the context of the church-state relationship that existed following the Union of 1800. Further, by exploring architecture, churchmanship and musical style, O'Shea demonstrates how the Chapel was part of a wider aesthetic and liturgical tradition. The choral foundation is brought to life with accounts of the Chapel's clergy, organists, boy choristers and gentleman singers, which provide insights into Dublin's social history during a period of significant change. This book reflects on the Dublin Chapel Royal's legacy a century after its closure and offers a new perspective into a forgotten corner of Irish cultural, religious and political history.

“But what is this scent of balmy air? What this ray of light in my tomb? I seem to see an angel, amid a scent of roses” sings Florestan in Fidelio, Beethoven’s only opera. The role of scents, smells, fragrances, and odours in opera has long been neglected, just as how much opera and its stars have influenced the world of perfumery from the nineteenth century to the present day. In the first book-length study on the topic, Professor Mary May Robertson explores the relationship between opera, perfumes, and their respective protagonists in order to map out the previously undiscussed connection between the two. Through compelling close readings of librettos and rigorous research through thousands of bottles of perfume, the reader will come to appreciate and recognise the influences and exchanges between operas and perfumes and their ultimate marriage in the previously unrecognised genre of Operatic Perfumes, which is to say, perfumes named after operas, composers, and their divas.
