Teodoro de Sykeon fue un monje bizantino nacido en 530 y que vivió en Galacia (Asia Menor), donde también murió en 613. Hijo de una prostituta que prestaba sus servicios en la posta imperial de la localidad, se distinguió desde su juventud por las duras disciplinas a las que se sometió y por sus excepcionales dotes como exorcista. Pasó toda su vida luchando contra el demonio y liberando a personas, animales y hasta las cosechas de las enfermedades y males causados por el maligno, lo que le proporcionó una enorme popularidad. Consagrado obispo de una ciudad vecina a los dieciocho años, su fama hizo que fuese llamado varias veces a la capital del Imperio, Constantinopla, así como a otras ciudades, incluida Jerusalén, para poner sus dotes de exorcista al servicio de emperadores, patriarcas y altos cargos de la corte. Esta es la primera traducción del griego al español de su larga Vida, obra de un tal Jorge Eleusios, monje y discípulo, en la que resulta difícil distinguir entre la imagen de un brujo, un curandero y un santo.

Pero ¿y si esta descripción fuera sólo un mito moderno aceptado por verdadero? Esta investigación trata de analizar los códigos y límites de la violencia medieval y el verdadero papel de lo sagrado. En textos coetáneos como la Chanson de Roland se nos muestra una imagen idealizada de los caballeros como defensores del honor dispuestos de igual manera a la paz y a la guerra. Por otra parte, en los textos monásticos y en los relatos de milagros se nos presenta a los caballeros como unos déspotas que no reconocen la supremacía de los siervos de Dios por encima del poder terrenal. En estos textos los caballeros acaban siendo víctimas del castigo divino. El autor propone una lectura deconstructiva de estos documentos y observar aquello que se dice de pasada.
