En décembre 1901, Henri Vidal, fils d’une hôtelière de Hyères âgé de 34 ans, agresse à coups de couteau deux prostituées, puis assassine une troisième fille publique ainsi qu’une jeune Suissesse. Arrêté parce qu’il voyageait sans billet, celui que le pays surnomme très vite «?le Tueur de femmes?» est condamné à mort par la cour d’assises de Nice, puis gracié et envoyé au bagne de Cayenne où il meurt en 1906. Dès ses crimes commis, l’assassin devient l’objet d’une imposante production discursive : faits divers, chroniques judiciaires, témoignages, expertises, ainsi qu’une autobiographie rédigée en prison. À partir de ces matériaux, et sans rien ajouter aux paroles des contemporains, les auteurs ont réalisé un montage qui permet de dérouler le film de cette existence, mais qui montre aussi comment une société, dans sa diversité et ses contradictions, construit la figure d’un criminel. Publié en 2001, longtemps indisponible, ce livre singulier, dont la forme suscita l’étonnement, interroge à la fois l’écriture du passé, la nature du récit biographique, les incertitudes et la fragilité de l’histoire.

Les tueurs en série exercent aujourd’hui une fascination morbide : livres, documentaires, séries, films leur sont consacrés. Le plus souvent, ils sont présentés comme de sinistres personnages qui ont surgi aux États-Unis dans les années 1970, puis en France dans les années 1990. La répétition des meurtres, le mode opératoire, l’identité des « proies » sont les principaux éléments permettant de les caractériser, de comprendre ce qui se joue et de tout mettre en œuvre pour empêcher que d’autres victimes subissent un sort funeste. Au XIXe siècle, tandis que les savoirs sur le crime prennent davantage de densité, que l’enquête de police, l’instruction judiciaire, la médecine et la psychiatrie légale se déploient, les contemporains ne s’intéressent guère ni à la réitération du crime ni à la « passion criminelle ». La plupart des victimes sont des femmes anonymes : prostituées, servantes, demoiselles de magasin, veuves. Il a donc existé des tueurs de femmes – de nos jours, leurs crimes seraient qualifiés de « féminicides systémiques » – qui sont des tueurs en série et passent presque inaperçus. De la sorte, demeure une énigme : qu’est-ce qui pousse au crime ? Pourquoi des hommes s’en prennent-ils exclusivement à des femmes, quelle force mystérieuse les anime ? Pourquoi ne peuvent-ils s’empêcher de recommencer ? Ces tueurs en série, même ceux qui ont fait l’objet d’une expertise mentale, ne sont pas considérés comme fous, ils sont jugés, condamnés, la plupart à la peine de mort, et exécutés. La justice se contente de mobiles apparents. Ce qui importe, c’est que l’institution judiciaire puisse fonctionner. Or la plupart des mobiles évoqués ne permettent pas de comprendre le passage à l’acte et cette addiction au crime est restée introuvable.

Today, history is increasingly written in the first person. A growing number of historical works include an autobiographical dimension, as if writing about the past required exploring the inner life of the author. Neither traditional history nor autobiography, this hybrid genre calls the norms of the historical profession into question. In search of new and creative paths, it transgresses a cardinal rule of the discipline: third-person narration, long considered necessary to the objective analysis of the past. Singular Pasts offers a critical account of the emergence of authorial subjectivity in historical writing, scrutinizing both its achievements and its shortcomings. Enzo Traverso considers a group of contemporary historians, including Ivan Jablonka, Sergio Luzzatto, and Mark Mazower, who reveal their emotional ties to their subjects and give their writing a literary flavor. He identifies a parallel trend in literature, in which authors such as W. G. Sebald, Patrick Modiano, Javier Cercas, and Daniel Mendelsohn write their works as investigations based on archival sources. Traverso argues that first-person history mirrors contemporary ways of thinking: such writing is presentist and apolitical, perceiving and representing the past through an individual lens. Probing the limits of subjective historiography, he emphasizes that it is collective action that produces social change: “we” instead of “I.” In an epilogue, Traverso considers the first-person writing of Saidiya Hartman as a counterexample. A wide-ranging and illuminating critique of a key trend in humanistic inquiry, Singular Pasts reconsiders the notion of historical truth in a neoliberal age.
