Some traditional Austrian dishes - especially desserts - are introduced and woven into the story lines as well as famous land marks and sights. They are diverse in style and form. One of them is a fable. Another story describes a modern day Faust, who tries to explain the world in an Excel formula; and yet another one is written as a magazine interview with a famous actor.Let your mind stroll across Vienna and enjoy the stories it tells.

"Vienna is a city with a storied past - and the stories in this collection give life and breath to that past. As might be expected from fictions about a city that was once home to Sigmund Freud, there is soul searching here, along with a wide range of insights into the human condition. There is humor too, exemplified in the first story, in which a sincere but ill-informed tour guide (mis)leads tourists around Vienna from morning to night. Although the stories are grouped by the city's neighborhoods, you will surely want to trespass these boundaries."--BOOK JACKET.

Set in Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century, these early works now published in English for the first time, show that from the beginning of his literary career, Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was already a master of both the short story and his favored fictional form, the novella. In the shorter pieces, the upper-class intellectual Zweig renders with sympathy some of life's outcasts: a "slow" student driven to violence; two ridiculed factory workers; a prostitute longing for love. Yet his keen perception and wry wit allow him to sidestep the sentimental and arrive at tender yet stark portrayals. The two novellas, "The Love of Erika Ewald" and "Scarlet Fever" follow the travails of characters closer in temperament and upbringing to Zweig's own. The first concerns a young pianist whose delicate nature interferes with her sensual fulfillment; the second, a gentle medical student struggling to adjust himself to the city's harsh realities. In these portraits, Zweig presents a theme that would figure not only in his later fiction but also in his own life as a Jewish writer in the Nazi era: the plight of highly sensitive souls in a crude and uncaring world.

This epic saga spanning a century and three generations of a Jewish family is Ray Kingfisher's most original and ambitious novel to date.Three Tales from Vienna follows the fortunes of the Rosenthal family through the eyes of three sisters: the prim but compassionate Alicia, the confident social butterfly that is Giselle, and the studious baby of the family, Klara. But this is more than a tale of three ordinary Jewish sisters; this is also three tales of one great city, of how the changes brought about by union with Hitler's Germany would prove to have a devastating effect on the character of Vienna as well as the Rosenthal family. Tale One - Calm Waters, Ordinary Lives - is set before the union with Germany, when the three sisters enjoy a typical carefree existence, each searching for love and fulfilment in her own individual manner, each doing her best to ignore the looming cloud of their country's aggressive neighbor. Covering Vienna's most tumultuous years, Tale Two - A Bitter North Wind - sees the sisters' lives torn apart by the brutal National Socialist regime, forcing each of them to deal with persecution in strikingly different ways. In the post-war setting of Tale Three - Salvage and Legacy

All Vienna knows that the inhabitant of number 10 Seilerstatte is none other than Christopher Alt, piano maker, the best in Vienna, probably in all of Austria, and possiblly the world over. His piano keys have given life to melodies by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and many more. On his deathbed, moved by the wish to keep his children united, he leaves a will specifying that his descendants, if they are to get their inheritance, must live together in the family home. Over successive generations of the Alt family, history itself passes through the doors, down the halls, and into the private rooms of the Alt’s building. There is intrigue at the court of Franz-Josef: an heir to the throne has fallen in love with Henrietta Alt, who will have to carry the guilt for his eventual suicide. There are betrayals, beloved illegitimate children, and despised legitimate offspring. There are seething passions and icy relations, a world war and the rise of Nazism to contend with. There are duals, ambitions, hopes, affairs of the heart and affairs of state. Three generations of Alts live and die at number 10 Silerstatte and each member of the family, in his or or her own way, is a privileged witness to the winds of change and a Europe at the height of both its splendor and decadence
