Jean Cassien nous livre ici ce qu’il a vécu et découvert au cours de son expérience de vie monastique auprès des plus célèbres communautés d’Égypte, au IV e siècle. A travers la minutieuse description des rites et coutumes des premières générations de moines, c’est toute une spiritualité qui se dessine, dont le centre et le but se ramènent à un seul idéal : acquérir un cœur pur où le Seigneur pourra demeurer. Le très célèbre « Discours de prise d’habit » est une magnifique illustration de l’attitude intérieure ainsi recherchée. Elle n’a d’autre fondement que l’humilité. La longue description des dix degrés par lesquels, en s’abaissant, on s’élève (Luc 14, 11), ouvre un chemin par lequel le disciple du Christ apprend patiemment à rejoindre son Seigneur jusqu’au cœur même de son mystère pascal. Dans un langage simple, direct et fraternel, Cassien prend son lecteur par la main pour le guider sur les voies parfois déroutantes de toute vie spirituelle authentique. Par de très justes conseils, toujours tirés d’une longue expérience, il nous permet finalement de recueillir ici l’essentiel des leçons de la séculaire tradition monastique sur la vie de prière, une prière dans la vie, une vie qui est prière. Notre existence nous apparaît alors, peu à peu, comme un continuel dialogue avec Dieu. Que l’on soit moine, prêtre ou laïc, il y a là, à n’en pas douter, un héritage à recueillir qui n’a rien à envier aux mystiques orientaux. À PROPOS DE L'AUTEUR Jean Cassien est mal connu. On ne sait si le nom de Jean lui fut donné à son baptême ou quand il devint moine, ni s'il naquit en Dobroudja (Roumanie) ou en Provence. Il est certain que, très jeune, il fut moine à Bethléem. Vers 385 il partit pour l'Égypte avec un fidèle compagnon, le prêtre Germain, et il y passa une quinzaine d'années. Vers 400, il se rendit à Constantinople, où Jean Chrysostome l'ordonna diacre. Durant les persécutions que subit ce grand saint, Cassien se montra son disciple fidèle et reçut de son maître une mission à Rome. Il semble que Cassien revint en Orient et que, vers 415, après une seconde mission à Rome, il s'établit à Marseille où il fonda deux monastères, Saint-Victor pour les hommes et Saint-Sauveur pour les femmes. Il composa vers 417 les Institutions cénobitiques, puis ses célèbres Conférences ou Collationes et composa un traité sur l'Incarnation, contre Nestorius, patriarche de Constantinople. Il mourut vers 435.

Cette breve allusion a une ascension celeste a suscite la curiosite de generations de lecteurs, et quelques-uns d'entre eux, voulant combler les lacunes du texte paulien, ont invente leurs propres recits de ce qui s'est passe pendant ce voyage celeste. Un de ces recits, la Visio sancti Pauli, a connu une grande fortune dans l'antiquite tardive et au Moyen-age, et a exerce une influence considerable sur la creation de la Divine comedie de Dante. Il existe d'autres recits analogues, parmi lesquels se trouve l'Apocalypse de Paul conservee dans une version copte, et d'origine gnostique, recit beaucoup plus obscur que la Visio, mais tout aussi fascinant. Son auteur utilise de facon pleinement consciente, la tradition judeo-chretienne des apocalypses d'ascension, une tradition constituee de textes qui racontent l'ascension aux cieux d'un visionnaire. L'Apocalypse de Paul se sert des motifs de cette tradition pour construire son propre recit. La seule copie de cette Apocalypse de Paul qui nous soit parvenue se trouve dans le cinquieme codex de la bibliotheque de Nag Hammadi. D'une importance considerable pour quiconque s'interesse aux ecrits pauliniens ou apocalyptiques, ce texte possede en lui-meme un charme certain. Le present volume contient une nouvelle edition du texte copte, accompagnee d'une traduction francaise, d'une ample introduction, d'un commentaire exhaustif, redige en anglais, et d'index copte et greco-copte; il offre l'analyse la plus complete a ce jour de cet ecrit. L'auteur de commentaire propose de voir dans l'Apocalypse de Paul un ouvrage de propagande valentinien, redige pour convaincre ses lecteurs de la domination du dieu createur, alors que l'auteur de l'introduction adopte un point de vue different.
