Gleichzeitig mit seiner ersten Cometenentdeckung begann er eifrigst und mit grosser Ausdauer Rechnungen auszuführen, wozu nament lich die Cometen und bald nachher die neu entdeckten Aste roiden vielfache Gelegenheit lieferten. Die Astronomen werden sich der Worte erinnern, mit welchen Encke in seinem Vor worte zu Brünnow's sph_ärischer Astronomie seine zwei gleich zeitigen Schüler rühmlichst erwähnt: Es gab selbst Zeiten, wo ein besonders thätiger Wetteifer bei meinen jüngeren Freunden ein sehr erfreuliches Leben auf der Sternwarte hervorrief, und zu diesen Zeiten rechne ich auch die Periode, m welcher der Verfasser dieses Werkes, in Verbindung mit dem jetzigen Observator der Leipziger Sternwarte, Herrn d'arrest, aus eigenem freien Antriebe längere Zeit hindurch an den Arbeiten auf der Sternwarte einen lebhaften Antheil nahm und durch unmittelbare Anwendung mit den verschie denen Theilen der Astronomie sich bekannt machte.
