Vietnam War Portraits written by Thomas Sanders and has been published by Casemate this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-29 with Photography categories.

This volume honors those who experienced the Vietnam War through striking portraits and personal accounts of the conflict and its repercussions. This book offers a uniquely human perspective on the Vietnam War through portraits and stories of American veterans, southern Vietnamese veterans, and civilians. The surreal imagery of Thomas Sanders’ photography encourages the viewer to take a closer look at those who experienced the war. These images are paired with the individuals’ haunting, inspirational, and sometimes comical stories of the war. Set in a surreal jungle environment, the portraits evoke the sense of darkness and uncertainty felt by those who experienced the war. Some portrait subjects hold objects that evoke their time of service: the common cigarette pack smoked by the vets while in the jungle; a homemade grenade made by the northern Vietnamese; and the “order to report” document that changed many a life.

Warring Visions written by Thy Phu and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-18 with Photography categories.

In Warring Visions, Thy Phu explores photography from dispersed communities throughout Vietnam and the Vietnamese diaspora, both during and after the Vietnam War, to complicate narratives of conflict and memory. While the visual history of the Vietnam War has been dominated by American documentaries and war photography, Phu turns to photographs circulated by the Vietnamese themselves, capturing a range of subjects, occasions, and perspectives. Phu's concept of warring visions refers to contrasts in the use of war photos in North Vietnam, which highlighted national liberation and aligned themselves with an international audience, and those in South Vietnam, which focused on family and everyday survival. Phu also uses warring visions to enlarge the category of war photography, a genre that usually consists of images illustrating the immediacy of combat and the spectacle of violence, pain, and wounded bodies. She pushes this genre beyond such definitions by analyzing pictures of family life, weddings, and other quotidian scenes of life during the war. Phu thus expands our understanding of how war is waged, experienced, and resolved.

Television footage and reportage photography relayed the American-Vietnam war from the remote jungles of Southeast Asia into the sitting rooms of ordinary people living thousands of miles from the battle zones. For the first time in history, a major civilian audience was able to monitor military operations on the other side of the world from the comfort of their armchairs. Tremendous numbers of people lost their lives in the conflict, and the social, economic and political effects of the war will continue to be felt for decades to come. This fully color-illustrated catalogue presents another aspect of the conflict, as seen by Vietnamese artists who created these images of war from behind the lines. Included are 130 works on paper, ranging from sketches on cardbard to paintings on traditional Vietnamese rice paper. Watercolors, pen and ink sketches, pencil drawings, chalk designs, ink paintings and acrylics are all represented in this unique archive, the first to be acquired for a public collection outside Vietnam. Some of the artists were engaged in the creation of propaganda material for the government and others were recording the war, but some were simply exercising their creative talents for the sheer pleasure of it.This catalogue accompanies the exhibition at the British Museum from June 13 to September 22, 2002.

Discover what it was like to be amidst the action as a military photographer during the Vietnam War. Shooting Vietnam takes you there as you read the firsthand accounts and view the hundreds of photographs by men who lived the war through the lens of a camera. From the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, they documented everything from the horror of combat to the people and culture of a land they suddenly found themselves immersed in. Some juggled cameras with weapons as they fought to survive while carrying out their assignments to record the war. Others did not survive. Shooting Vietnam also finally brings recognition to these unheralded military combat photographers in Vietnam that documented the brutal, unpopular, and futile war. Often, during a brief respite from trudging through swamps and rice paddies or jumping from a chopper into a hot landing zone, the photographers would wander the streets of villages or even downtown Saigon, curiously photographing a people and a culture so strange and different to them. It is these photographs, of a kinder, more personal nature, removed from the horror and death of war that they also share with the reader. The accounts in this book come from young men thrust into a conflict half way around the world, and all who had their own unique perspective on the war. Some were seasoned photographers before the military, others had only recently held a camera for the first time. “The photography is excellent . . . an essential read to anyone interested in the Vietnam War or conflict photography in general.” —War History Online

This collection of portraits made during the Vietnam War is a unique contribution to the imagery and literature of the Indochina conflict. The portraits show journalists who covered the war, photographers, officials, freelances, military figures of both sides and many others. Neal Ulevich, who later won the Pulitzer Prize for his photography in Thailand, made these Polaroid images as a diversion from the grim work of combat photographer and photo editor. The years have leavened the images into history.

Living With War Portraits written by Judith Joy Ross and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Americans categories.

In the photographs by Judith Joy Ross the person is caught in his time and historic dimension. Living With War contains three groups of portraits of American citizens in relation to USA war missions during the past 30 years. The most recent pictures present people who demonstrated in 2006/07 against USA involvement in the war in Iraq. They are accompanied by shots made more than 15 years earlier of soldiers who were photographed shortly before their initial deployment in the first Gulf war. The third group of photos is from 1983/84 at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. It shows individual portraits of visitors paying tribute to the victims of war in Southeast Asia. These close shots dont take sides with any particular political orientation. They simply tell how irreplaceable the individual is and how keeping his memory serves as the basis of human interaction. Judith Joy Ross, born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, in 1946, studied photography at the Chicago Art Institute. She has received several awards and prizes, including the Charles Pratt Memorial Award, an Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. Ms. Ross lives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
