This is a collection of essays on the arts, new media, popular culture, and technologies as they influence practices of curriculum development and teaching. The authors - artists, educators, scholars, and researchers with both scholarly and practical expertise - share their teaching practices and curriculum knowledge, and reflect upon challenging issues in contemporary art, popular culture, new media, and technology. Each chapter proposes pedagogical structures and curriculum resources that can be adapted to diverse school contexts and technical resources. The perspectives gathered in this book reflect ideas drawn from several disciplines, including contemporary art, histories of the arts, culture and technology, cultural studies, and media studies, as well as various approaches to the study of technologies; authors also incorporate a range of educational theories and instructional practices, mainly from the visual and performing arts. At times explicit and at others implicit, these wide-ranging conceptual influences inform the varied curriculum and teaching practices described here. Together, these essays and their companion DVD, which illustrates many of these diverse perspectives, provide a comprehensive and thoughtful look at arts-based approaches to new media.

Basic Animation Stand Techniques describes the use and importance of the animation stand in making animated films for the screen. The book describes the fundamental operation and construction of the animation stand where the film camera is mounted. The text explains in detail how the animation stand holds the camera, which points vertically straight down on the table containing the artwork. The selection describes the zoom movement, the light box, and the cell punch. Then the book discusses the three kinds of methods of animation, namely, modification, substitution, and mechanical movement. The book teaches some basic techniques of animation as well as the use of superimposition, image replacement, back projection, aerial image, fades, or mixes. The text explains exposures at different sized fields and camera exposure sheets, the latter containing detailed instructions on how to shoot each single frame. The book also notes the settings that can be achieved on a modern animation stand, including the counters and calibration of gears and wheels. For example, a movement can be as precise as a hundredth of an inch, while a rotation can be made in a tenth of a degree. The book also provides a fairing table, different exposures for different films, and a method to approximate the amount of film stock left in a magazine. The text is valuable for artists, animators, animation technicians, film directors, and others working in the film industry.

Digital cameras, both in traditional form factors and as parts of cell phones, have become ubiquitous over the last decade. But for the most part, they remain black boxes to the end-user, and cannot be reprogrammed or modified. This has become an obstacle to researchers in the new field of computational photography, who want to use the growing computing power of digital cameras to create images no traditional camera could produce. This dissertation presents the Frankencamera platform, a digital camera system designed for computational photography. The Frankencamera is a fully open, fully programmable digital camera, which can be easily modified to test out new research ideas. The Frankencamera architecture allows for per-frame control of the capture process, and accurate synchronization of all the components that make up the camera. Based on this architecture, this dissertation details two hardware platforms: the F2, a flexible custom-built camera; and the Nokia N900, a commercial smartphone. Both platforms can be easily programmed at a high level using the FCam API, written to embody the Frankencamera architecture. Finally, this dissertation presents several sample applications for the Frankencamera platform. Several of these applications could not have been developed for any existing camera platform, and the ease and speed at which they were written show that the Frankencamera platform is a compelling tool for computational photography.

First published in 1985. Exactly 20 years have passed since the first edition of this text appeared, in 1965. During this period, the author has gathered feedback from professional film-making circles. This fourth revision introduces new information in nearly all chapters. 130 new illustrations have been added, many of them illustrating feature films which are currently in release. The bibliography has also been enlarged considerably. The contributions of the visual-effects cinematographer have always been valued highly within the theatrical motion-picture industry. Because of their work, film producers have been able to endow their pictures with considerable 'production value' which the budget could not otherwise sustain.

And written by Barry Schein and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-21 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

A bold argument that “and” always means “&,” the truth-functional sentential connective. In this book, Barry Schein argues that “and” is always the sentential logical connective with the same, one, meaning. “And” always means “&,” across the varied constructions in which it is tokened in natural language. Schein examines the constructions that challenge his thesis, and shows that the objections disappear when these constructions are translated into Eventish, a neo-Davidsonian event semantics, and, enlarged with Cinerama Semantics, a vocabulary for spatial orientation and navigation. Besides rescuing “and” from ambiguity, Eventish and Cinerama Semantics solve general puzzles of grammar and meaning unrelated to conjunction, revealing the book's central thesis in the process: aspects of meaning mistakenly attributed to “and” are discovered to reflect neighboring structures previously unseen and unacknowledged. Schein argues that Eventish and Cinerama Semantics offer a fundamental revision to clause structure and what aspects of meaning are represented therein. Eventish is distinguished by four features: supermonadicity, which enlarges verbal decomposition so that every argument relates to its own event; descriptive event anaphora, which replaces simple event variables with silent descriptive pronouns; adverbialization, which interposes adverbials derived from the descriptive content of every DP; and AdrPs, which replace all NPs with Address Phrases that locate what nominals denote within scenes or frames of reference. With 'And,' Schein rehabilitates an old rule of transformational, generative grammar, answering the challenges to it exhaustively and meticulously.
