Defining Russian Graphic Arts explores the energy and innovation of Russian graphic arts during the period which began with the explosion of artistic creativity initiated by Serge Diaghilev at the end of the nineteenth century and which ended in the mid-1930s with Stalin's devastating control over the arts. This beautifully illustrated book represents the development of Russian graphic arts as a continuum during these forty years, and places Suprematism and Constructivism in the context of the other major, but lesser-known, manifestations of early twentieth-century Russian art. The book includes such diverse categories of graphic arts as lubki (popular prints), posters and book designs, journals, music sheets, and ephemera. It features not only standard types of printed media and related studies and maquettes, but also a number of watercolor and gouache costume and stage designs. About 100 works borrowed from the National Library of Russia and the Research Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia-many seen here for the first time outside of Russia-are featured in this book. "Barents Russia" is the far northwestern corner of the Russian Federation, bordering on the Barents Sea and the affluent Nordic countries. It is a region full of natural resources - petroleum, fish, minerals, etc - much of which is yet to be exploited. The region is heavily influenced by the Cold War and 70 years of Soviet central planning, with heavy industry concentrated in "company-towns", and with a strong military presence. The region also houses some serious threats to a vulnerable Arctic environment. The ten past years have brought historic changes in Barents Russia and in the relations between this region and the world around it. Yet, the next couple of decades may bring even more profound changes, the direction of which is hard to predict. Much hangs in the balance, ranging from the supply of oil and gas to the world market to broader political issues such as the future for democracy and the rule of law, the protection of the environment, the integration into world trade and the old favourite topic of the high north - the strategic balance. This book presents three plausible but provoking scenarios for the future of Barents Russia: "Big Oil Playground", "Russian Bear Preserve" or "European Periphery", and will hopefully contribute to increased attention and deeper understanding of the forces and actors that will shape the region. The health of the Russian economy still depends heavily on natural resource revenues. The history of the economic collapse and recovery in 1970–2004 provides new evidence on the sources of Russian economic growth, while a survey of the economic literature suggests that the Russian economy could be viewed as a weighted combination of virtual and normal forces. If the Russian economy is considered to be dominated by normal market economy forces, higher energy export receipts provide an opportunity for structural reforms while compensating for social costs, making the economy less vulnerable to decline in world energy prices. However, the domination of virtual forces—value transfers from the energy sector to strategic enterprises—suggests that high world energy prices are masking an inefficient manufacturing sector, and that the Russian economy is highly vulnerable to energy price declines.
