Kirja on munkki "Anonymus Salarialaisen" matkakertomus-trilogian ensimmäinen osa. Trilogia kuvaa kolmessa matkakertomuksessa Flavius Aëtiuksen elämän ja samalla ritariuden synnyn. Ensimmäisessä osassa kenraali Merobaudeksen poika Aëtiuksen lähtee pankkivangiksi hunnien kuningas Charatonin luo. Aëtiuksen ja Jasonin panttivankeudella vahvistetaan Rooman ja hunnivaltakunnan välinen rauhansopimus. Matka alkaa vuonna 408 Salvasta, nykyisestä Esztergomista. Nuoret miehet vaeltavat saattueensa mukana hunnien kuningasten kylään Tonavan toiselle puolelle, viilliksi tulleen maan läpi Rooman perikadon ratkaisevalla aikakaudella. Ympärillä näkyvät kaikki kulttuurin murenimisen ja uuden aikakauden muodostumisen kaaoksen merkit: kaupunkien, maaseudun infrastruktuurin romahtaminen, vesihuollon, koulunkäynnin, rahatalouden loppuminen. Matkalla Jasoniin ja Aêtiukseen liittyy kaksi muuta nuorta miestä gootti Condor ja hunni Phandor, ja syntyy nuorten miesten valaliitto, josta ritarius lähtee liikkeelle. Tuhon maisemassa, kaaoksen ytimsessä, kypsyy uusi järjestys, jonka käytös normit kertovat miten ritariuden palavahenkiset säännöt luotiin. Vuosien panttivankina olon jälkeen Aëtius palaa ritariystävineen Rooman, entistä kaoottisempaan tilaan muuttuneen maiseman läpi, jossa heidän liittonsa entisestään vahvistuu. Matka päättyy , Aëtiuksen tullessa nuoresta miehestä aikuiseksi, ja matkatoverien alkaessa valmistella uutta matkaa, paavin ja Rooman prefektin määräyksestä Etelä-Ranskan ritariuden syntysijojen läpi Britanniaan, sinne, jossa legendat kertovat myöhemmin olleen kuningas Arthurin hovin. The Eusistocratic Republic of Finland has bred a new human sub-species of receptive, submissive women, called eloi, for sex and procreation, while intelligent, independent women are relegated to menial labour and sterilized. Vanna, raised as an eloi but secretly intelligent, needs money to help her doll-like sister, Manna. Vanna forms a friendship with a man named Jare, and they become involved in buying and selling a stimulant known to the Health Authority to be extremely dangerous: chilli peppers. Then Manna disappears, and Jare comes across a strange religious cult in possession of the Core of the Sun, a chilli so hot that it is rumoured to cause hallucinations. Does this chilli have effects that justify its prohibition? How did Finland turn into the North Korea of Europe? And will Vanna succeed in her quest to find her sister, or will her growing need to satisfy her chilli addiction destroy her? Johanna Sinisalo's tautly told story of fight and flight is also a feisty, between-the-lines social polemic - a witty, inventive, and fiendishly engaging read from the queen of 'Finnish Weird'.

Spartacus And The Slave Wars written by Brent D. Shaw and has been published by Palgrave Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-02-24 with History categories.

In 72 B.C., in the heart of Rome's Mediterranean empire, a slave named Spartacus ignited one of the most violent episodes of slave resistance in the history of the Roman Empire--indeed in the world annals of slavery. This volume organizes original translations of 80 Greek and Latin sources into topical chapters that look at the daily lives of slaves trained as gladiators and those who labored on farms in Italy and Sicily, including accounts of revolts that preceded and anticipated that of Spartacus. In a carefully crafted introductory essay, Shaw places Spartacus in the broader context of first and second century B.C. Rome, Italy and Sicily and explains why his story continues to be a popular symbol of rebellion today. The volume also includes a glossary, chronology, selected bibliography, three maps, an annotated list of ancient writers, and questions for consideration.

The Roman Empire written by Peter Garnsey and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with History categories.

During the Principate (roughly 27 BCE to 235 CE), when the empire reached its maximum extent, Roman society and culture were radically transformed. But how was the vast territory of the empire controlled? Did the demands of central government stimulate economic growth or endanger survival? What forces of cohesion operated to balance the social and economic inequalities and high mortality rates? How did the official religion react in the face of the diffusion of alien cults and the emergence of Christianity? These are some of the many questions posed here, in the new, expanded edition of Garnsey and Saller's pathbreaking account of the economy, society, and culture of the Roman Empire. This second edition includes a new introduction that explores the consequences for government and the governing classes of the replacement of the Republic by the rule of emperors. Addenda to the original chapters offer up-to-date discussions of issues and point to new evidence and approaches that have enlivened the study of Roman history in recent decades. A completely new chapter assesses how far Rome’s subjects resisted her hegemony. The bibliography has also been thoroughly updated, and a new color plate section has been added.

The book provides an important case study on Essex as well as drawing comparisons with other regions of early modern England. The second edition of this classic work adds a new historiographical introduction, placing the book in context today.
