This volume is divided into four sections: late medieval devotion in the Netherlands; medieval Christian pilgrimage; the medieval cult of St. James the Great and Erasmiana. Variety and coherence sound the keynote in the title and the contents of the book. Religious concepts and expressions of religious faith such as pilgrimages and indulgences are representative of late-medieval Christianity. In this book they refer specifically to the medieval cult of St. James the Great, while for Erasmus they were an object of his critical consideration. The whole book can be read in the light of the debate about the tension between an appreciation for outward signs of faith, and the inward experience of religious belief, which Erasmus considered an absolute necessity.

Meyrink, een van de jongeren uit Gottliebs kring - huisvriend, intimus en bloedbroeder - raakte bijna idolaat van zijn oudere vriend en schreef zijn fascinatie van zich af in dit minutieuze dagboek. Als een ware Eckermann bezocht Meyrink zijn leermeester en idool vrijwel dagelijks in diens woning en deed opmerkelijk nauwgezet verslag van alle conversaties en gebeurtenissen, en zijn eigen overwegingen daarbij. De lezer kan zich voortdurend een beeld vormen van de intelligentie, diepgang, welsprekendheid en wijsheid van de oude meester in de beslotenheid van zijn alledaagse, en ondanks zijn internationale roem tamelijk eenvoudige bestaan in Doesburg. Meyrinks respectvolle en levendige verslag begint in Gottliebs laatste eenzame periode (eind 1990), na de dood van diens geliefde vrouw Liesje, en eindigt - aansluitend op Gottliebs stormachtige liefdesrelatie met de drieënvijftig jaar jongere violiste Annet ten Hove - met zijn tragische dood. Frank Meyrink (1964) was van 1984 tot 1992 verbonden aan de New School. Daarna werkte hij enige tijd aan de heruitgave van Gottliebs geschriften. Hij is theaterwetenschapper en vertaler Duits en Middel-Hoog-Duits (ridderromans).
