Carry van Bruggen is een van die schrijvers waarvan het werk in hun eigen tijd niet op de juiste waarde is geschat en die pas van een latere generatie de waardering hebben gekregen die ze toekomt. Niet dat Carry van Bruggen in haar eigen tijd ongelezen is gebleven. Maar ze was nu eenmaal een vrouw, en vrouwen schreven `damesromans . En damesromans werden niet gelezen door heren, en zeker niet door de mannen en venten die toentertijd de literaire toon aangaven. Twee boeken van Carry van Bruggen is dat lot bespaard gebleven, maar dat zijn dan ook geen romans, laat staan damesromans: de grote essays Prometheus en Hedendaags fetischisme. Prometheus was zelfs lange tijd het lijfboek van dé intellectueel van de jaren dertig: Menno ter Braak. Prometheus grote faam heeft tot de misvatting geleid dat in dát boek de ware Carry van Bruggen te vinden zou zijn. Maar het zijn juist haar romans, waarin ze zich het minst verhuld heeft uitgesproken over zichzelf, en daarmee over het leven van de vrouw van haar tijd. Ze beschrijft haar jeugd, zoals in Het huisje aan de sloot (ze was afkomstig uit de Zaanstreek), ze heeft het over haar leven als joods meisje uit een vroom en kleinburgerlijk milieu, compleet met `kleinheidswaan , in De verlatene en in Heleen, en ze is al even openhartig over haar leven als lid van de `tweede kunne in Een coquette vrouw en in Eva, haar meesterwerk. De vijf genoemde titels vormen, maar dan in chronologische volgorde, de inhoud van Vijf romans. Een representatieve keuze, naar geschakeerdheid, als beeld van de schrijfster en van de vrouw van het begin van de vorige eeuw, en naar kwaliteit.

This exciting new interpretation of Pauls Letter to the Romans approaches Pauls most famous letter from one of the newest scholarly positions within Pauline Studies: The Radical New Perspective on Paul (also known as Paul within Judaism). As a point of departure, the author takes Pauls self-designation in 11:13 as apostle to the gentiles as so determining for Pauls mission that the audience of the letter is perceived to be exclusively gentile. The study finds confirmation of this reading-strategy in the letters construction of the interlocutor from chapter 2 onwards. Even in 2:17, where Paul describes the interlocutor as someone who calls himself a Jew, it requests to perceive this person as a gentile who presents himself as a Jew and not an ethnic Jew. If the interlocutor is perceived in this way throughout the letter, the dialogue between Paul and the interlocutor can be perceived as a continuous, unified and developing dialogue. In this way, this interpretation of Romans sketches out a position against a more disparate and fragmentary interpretation of Romans.
