Nadat haar vader Herman uit het klooster was getreden, besloot hij samen met zijn vrouw Willy afvallige priesters op te vangen. Hun huis – De Wartburg, vernoemd naar het kasteel van Maarten Luther – werd een asielzoekerscentrum avant la lettre. De nood was groot. Wie afscheid nam van het kloosterleven verloor niet alleen status en identiteit, maar werd verstoten door vrienden en familie en moest soms vrezen voor zijn leven. Vanuit de hele wereld stroomden mensen toe, zoals Renato uit Italië, Aniano uit Spanje, Orlando uit Venezuela, Gust uit Oostenrijk en Thottil uit India. Allen zochten een veilig onderkomen en een nieuwe toekomst. Zestig jaar na de opening van De Wartburg in 1962 reconstrueert Loes Hegger met trefzekere literaire pen haar bijzondere jeugd. Ze duikt in de bewogen levens van de ex-priesters en beschrijft hoe hun keuzes hen vanuit de kloosterstilte naar een groot gezin in een Hollands dorp brachten.Het was een levendige gemeenschap, met exotische huwelijken, blijde geboortes en rare gewoontes.
