Excerpt from Village Life in Korea Ten years in Korea, much of which time has been spent among the people in the villages far removed from the outer world, have proved to be so intensely interesting to me that I am persuaded many other peo ple would be pleased to see Korea and her people as I have seen them. With this thought in mind these pages have been written, and with the hope that all who read will be brought into a clearer knowledge of and a deeper sympathy with this people who have been so often misrepresented and Whom I have learned to love so well. I have avoided everything in the form of bookish or literary style and tried to imagine myself telling my story to a company composed of men, women, and children who are anxious to learn more of a strange people in a far-away land. Excerpt from Fifteen Years Among the Top-Knots: Or Life in Korea IT may be said at once, that Mrs. Underwood's narra tive of her experience of Fifteen Years Among the Top Knots constitutes a book of no ordinary interest. There is no danger that any reader having even a moderate sympathy with the work of missions in the far East will be disappointed in the perusal. The writer does not undertake to give a comprehensive account of missions in Korea, or even of the one mission which she represents, but only of the things which she has seen and experienced. There is something naive and attractive in the way in which she takes her readers into her confidence while she tells her story, as trustfully as if she were only writing to a few relatives and friends. Necessarily she deals very largely with her own work, and that of her husband, as of that she is best qualified to speak. Everywhere, how ever, there are generous and appreciative references to the heroic labors of associate missionaries. Nor does she confine these tributes to members of her own mission. Some of her highest encomiums are given to members of other missions, who have laboured and died for the Gos pel and the cause of humanity in Korea. Excerpt from The Passing of Korea Much that is contained in this present volume is matter that has come under the writer's personal observation or has been derived directly from Koreans or from Korean works. Some of this matter has already appeared in 7723 Korea Review and elsewhere. The historical survey is a condensation from the writer's History of Korea. This book is a labour of love, undertaken in the days of Korea's distress, with the purpose Of interesting the reading public in a country and a people that have been frequently maligned and sel dom appreciated. They are overshadowed by China on the one hand in respect of numbers, and by Japan on the other in respect Of wit. They are neither good merchants like the one nor good fighters like the other, and yet they are far more like anglo-saxons in temperament than either, and they are by far the pleasantest people in the Far East to live amongst. Their failings are such as follow in the wake Of ignorance everywhere, and the bettering of their Opportunities will bring swift betterment to their condition. For aid in the compilation of this book my thanks are mainly due to a host Of kindly Koreans from every class in society, from the silk-clad yangban to the fettered criminal in prison, from the men who go up the mountains to monasteries to those who go down to the sea in ships. Excerpt from Quaint Korea I am speaking from the sentimental standpoint, of course. But, in this utilitarian age of ours, isn't it worth while to look at things sentiment ally, once in a way, if only for variety We have conferred the greatest practical blessings upon Asia; that I admit and maintain. But we have blurred the picture a bit, and I can't help being sorry. Only one country in Asia has, until lately, entirely escaped the blight and the blessing of our civilizing touch - Korea! Korea has not seemed worth our shot and powder. And many of us have not really known that there was such a place as Korea. But the war that is raging in farther Asia now has quickened our interest in the quaint kingdom of the morning calm. A History Of Korea written by Roger Tennant and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-12 with Social Science categories.

First published in 1996. Always there are hills in the distance, backed by mountains, wreathed in mist, and always the sound of water. These are the things that have inspired the Korea’s poets and artists and haunt the dreams of its exiles. An eastern backbone of sharp mountains has ribs that run westward and from these wooded hills flow the water that trickles through the rice fields. Climatic maps show it to be at the centre of a small area that is almost unique in its combination of cold dry winters and hot rainy summers. Most of its plants and animals are common to the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere but they are tested almost to destruction by seasonal alternations of Siberian cold and summer monsoons. In May the brown desert of winter begins to shimmer in a delicate veil of green which grows into a summer jungle and dies with glory in a long warm autumn of red and gold. About 600 miles in length and 150-200 miles wide, it reaches out from the mainland like an oriental Italy, with China embracing it to the north and west and Japan only 100 miles away to the south and east. This book illuminates the reader about the history of Korea.
