Villages, Ghosts, Lovers....And Red Rice is a hauntingly delightful true story of events that took place in the life of an African American family living in Savannah, Georgia from 1963 to 2000. Both dramatic and, at times, twistingly humorous, the story touches on root working, controversial interracial relationships, an eccentric 'dognapper', a piano teacher's relationship with a wealthy antique dealer who holds dark secrets, and other equally interesting events and personalities. Though centered in Savannah, events also take place in Manhattan New York, New Orleans, and on Martha's Vineyard. Rich in both Southern and African American culture, Villages, Ghosts, Lovers....And Red Rice reveals the spirit of a city that lures people to its sultry climate and mesmerizing beauty....and never let's go!

This book is a collection of stories that portray life as it is lived today under the shadow of the repressive and corrupt communist regime that now rules in Vietnam. The characters who live in these pages represent many levels of social class in the early 21st century in Vietnam. The stories illuminate the hardships and the soul-crushing routine of day-to-day life in a society governed by bullying bureaucrats and petty apparatchiks. The reader will meet orphaned children who wander the streets—selling newspapers or lottery tickets, collecting rubbish in exchange for a few spoonfuls of rice. There are stories of honest and patriotic intellectuals who have lost their way in a world that does not value their accomplishments. There are also sympathetic communists who now question their ideology and want to find a better way, but they cannot act for fear of economic hardship and even imprisonment. Another story addresses the issue of young women who have become victims of human trafficking, sold like cattle to rich foreigners. The title story, “The Rain still Falls in Saigon,” describes the return of an expatriate to her native land and her feelings of nostalgia and sadness as she surveys her homeland from an outsider’s perspective. All of the stories reflect the tears that the Vietnamese people have been crying for their country for more than 65 years.Doug BurkeEditor-at-large

In Ghost Letters, one emigrates to America again, and again, and again, though one also never leaves Senegal, the country of one’s birth; one grows up in America, and attends university in America, though one also never leaves Senegal, the country of one’s birth; one wrestles with one’s American blackness in ways not possible in Senegal, though one never leaves Senegal, the country of one’s birth; and one sees more deeply into Americanness than any native-born American could. Ghost Letters is a 21st century Notebook of a Return to the Native Land, though it is a notebook of arrival and being in America. It is a major achievement. —Shane McCrae

Love And Honor In The Himalayas written by Ernestine McHugh and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-07 with Social Science categories.

American anthropologist Ernestine McHugh arrived in the foothills of the Annapurna mountains in Nepal, and, surrounded by terraced fields, rushing streams, and rocky paths, she began one of several sojourns among the Gurung people whose ramro hawa-pani (good wind and water) not only describes the enduring bounty of their land but also reflects the climate of goodwill they seek to sustain in their community. It was in their steep Himalayan villages that McHugh came to know another culture, witnessing and learning the Buddhist appreciation for equanimity in moments of precious joy and inevitable sorrow. Love and Honor in the Himalayas is McHugh's gripping ethnographic memoir based on research among the Gurungs conducted over a span of fourteen years. As she chronicles the events of her fieldwork, she also tells a story that admits feeling and involvement, writing of the people who housed her in the terms in which they cast their relationship with her, that of family. Welcomed to call her host Ama and become a daughter in the household, McHugh engaged in a strong network of kin and friendship. She intimately describes, with a sure sense of comedy and pathos, the family's diverse experiences of life and loss, self and personhood, hope, knowledge, and affection. In mundane as well as dramatic rituals, the Gurungs ever emphasize the importance of love and honor in everyday life, regardless of circumstances, in all human relationships. Such was the lesson learned by McHugh, who arrived a young woman facing her own hardships and came to understand—and experience—the power of their ways of being. While it attends to a particular place and its inhabitants, Love and Honor in the Himalayas is, above all, about human possibility, about what people make of their lives. Through the compelling force of her narrative, McHugh lets her emotionally open fieldwork reveal insight into the privilege of joining a community and a culture. It is an invitation to sustain grace and kindness in the face of adversity, cultivate harmony and mutual support, and cherish life fully.

The Hungry Ghosts written by Shyam Selvadurai and has been published by Doubleday Canada this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-02 with Fiction categories.

"A novel of raw human longing. . . . His stripped-down prose focuses on the deeply personal with precision and insight. . . . Selvadurai's work reminds me that the contemporary novel doesn't necessarily have to resort to thrills or high jinks in order to find its usefulness. Here, it unforgettably explores the interplay between individual intention and the tragedy of a nation's history." —The Globe and Mail In Sri Lankan myth, a person who dies may be reborn a "hungry ghost"—a ghost with a large stomach that can never be filled through its tiny mouth—if he has desired too much during his life. It is the duty of the living to free the dead who are doomed to this fate by transferring karma from their own good deeds. In Shyam Selvadurai's masterful new novel, Shivan, a troubled young man of mixed Tamil and Sinhalese ancestry, is preparing to travel from Toronto, Canada, to the land of his childhood, Sri Lanka, to rescue his ailing grandmother and bring her back to die. But on the eve of his departure—as Shivan meditates on his turbulent past, recalls his gradual discovery of his homosexuality, and wrestles with his complicated relationship with the wily old woman—he discovers just how much his own heart's desires are entwined with the volatile political, racial, and sexual mix of Sri Lanka's past and present. In the end, Shivan must decide: will he rescue his grandmother, or join her? The Hungry Ghosts is an unconventional exploration of the immigrant experience; a tale of family ties and the long reach of the past; and a heartwrenching look at how racial, political, and sexual differences can tear apart a country, a family, and a human being.

Red Dust written by Ma Jian and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-06 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In 1983, Ma Jian turned 30 and was overwhelmed by the desire to escape the confines of his life in Beijing. With his long hair, jeans and artistic friends, Ma Jian was under surveillance from his work unit and the police, as Deng Xiaoping clamped down on 'Spiritual Pollution'. His ex-wife was seeking custody of their daughter; his girlfriend was sleeping with another man; and he could no longer find the inspiration to write or paint. One day he bought a train ticket to the westernmost border of China and set off in search of himself. Ma Jian's journey would last three years and take him to deserts and overpopulated cities, from scenes of barbarity to havens of tranquillity and beauty. The result is an utterly unique insight into the teeming contradictions of China that only a man who was both an insider and an outsider in his own country could have written.
