A Vincent van Gogh, pintor del color y de la luz, le fascinó durante toda su vida la representación del crepúsculo y de la noche. Muchos de sus cuadros y dibujos plasman esas horas, en particular. El ejemplo más famoso es La noche estrellada, que pintó en Saint-Rémy en junio de 1889, lienzo en el que supo captar con un brío extraordinario la atmósfera canicular de un firmamento cuajado de estrellas. Van Gogh admiraba profundamente la tradición pictórica de los paisajes crepusculares y nocturnos, y en sus inicios siguió los pasos de la Escuela de Barbizon. Con el tiempo, sin embargo, desarrolló un estilo totalmente propio, hasta llegar a la representación de 'la luz en la oscuridad', empleando un colorido sorprendente y una pincelada rítmica. En sus palabras: 'A menudo me parece que la noche es mucho más viva y rica en colores que el día'.

Paul Gauguin fue primero un marino y luego un exitoso corredor de bolsa en París. En 1874 comenzó a pintar los fines de semana, como pasatiempo. En Tahití, Gauguin descubrió el arte primitivo, con sus formas planas y los colores violentos de una naturaleza salvaje. Con sinceridad absoluta, los transfirió a sus lienzos. A partir de ese momento, sus pinturas reflejaron este estilo: una simplificación radical del dibujo, colores brillantes, puros y vivos, una composición de tipo ornamental y una deliberada falta de contraste en los planos. Gauguin bautizó su estilo como “simbolismo sintético”.
