It is one of our most distinctive traits, the one thing that all cultures and societies, across time, share in common. All societies are violent and all individuals have the capacity for violence. It explores how violence in the pre-modern world was different from the modern world, and what is significant about those differences. Along the way Dwyer considers some core questions, asking whether violence is always 'bad', and if there are any limits to human violence? What is a project? How are projects organized to deal with a complex, rapidly changing, and uncertain world? Why are projects the organization of the future? Today many people take reading for granted, but we remain some way off from attaining literacy for the global human population. And whilst we think we know what reading is, it remains in many ways a mysterious process, or set of processes.
