Violence is a central issue of contemporary society at all levels, affecting human relationships from the most intimate to the most impersonal. But what is violence? Is violence justifiable? What relevance does the fate of the victim of violence have to such questions? To address these and similar questions, this volume brings together thinkers from a wide range of philosophical backgrounds who employ a rich variety of methods, ranging from the strictly analytic to the postmodern. They explore issues such as responsibility, provocation, violation, cruelty, self-determination and deception in attempting to understand violence in relation both to the suffering of its victims and the justifications offered by its perpetrators and their supporters. In exploring these issues the essays collected in this volume explore terrorism, rape, genocide and state-sponsored violence.

Why Doesn T She Just Leave written by Oluchi Otti and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04 with Family & Relationships categories.

This book reveals the myriad of reasons why victims of domestic violence stay in abusive relationships. The reasons are as endless as the number of domestic violence victims. Each story is unique and each reason is valid. The author Dr. Oluchi Arowosafe strongly opined that blaming the victim is the wrong approach, stating that no matter how common the belief is, maintaining that no one deserves to be or enjoys being abused and that leaving a violent relationship is most often the most dangerous time for the victim. She maintains that by repeatedly asking this same question (Why doesn't she just leave?), the society continues to re-victimize the victim by pinning the responsibility squarely on her. The author opines that that the blame should be shifted to the perpetrator. The author equally indicates that by asking this question the society makes the problem to be the victim's and the solution to be her responsibility, totally absolving the criminal justice system and the social institutions their responsibilities of protecting victims of domestic violence. She opined that for victims to safely leave abusive situations, the society at large must cooperatively work to protect them and equally hold these perpetrators of violence accountable.

This book traces the trajectory of militant jihadism to show how violence is more intentionally embraced as the centre of worship, social order and ideology. Undertaking an in-depth analysis of militant jihadist groups and utilising the work of René Girard, Joel Hodge argues that the extreme violence of militant jihadists is a response to modernity in two ways that have not been sufficiently explored by the existing literature. Firstly, it is a manifestation of the unrestrained and escalating state of desire and rivalry in modernity, which militant jihadists seek to counter with extreme violence. Secondly, it is a response to the unveiling and discrediting of sacred violence, which militant jihadists seek to reverse by more purposefully valorising sacred violence in what they believe to be jihad. Relevant to anyone interested in Islam, philosophy of religion, theology, and terrorism, Violence in the Name of God imagines new ways of thinking about militancy in the name of Islam in the twenty-first century.

Library Journal Self-Help Bestseller Winner of the 2023 National Indie Excellence Award in African American Nonfiction Silver Winner of the 2023 Nautilus Book Award A revealing look at why domestic violence victims stay with their abusers…and how they can ultimately leave. And survive. One Saturday morning, Gooden is woken up by her husband shoving her off the bed for no discernible reason. Despite her quick thinking and even quicker footsteps, her husband catches her, his sudden anger inexplicable. No words are exchanged. He begins to strangle her as he has done many times before. With unflinching vulnerability, Gooden outlines in painstaking detail what she had to do to walk away and how others can use her experiences to escape their own abuse, from skimming the grocery money, to squirreling away personal belongings, to navigating a domestic violence shelter. She offers strategies for overcoming the barriers survivors often face, such as money, housing, overcritical social circles, or, most powerfully: love. Uniquely compassionate when it comes to the heartbreak of still loving one’s abuser, Gooden shares how she transformed and extended this love outward, using her story to encourage others to choose themselves. The voice and fire behind #WhyIStayed, Bev Gooden is exceptionally positioned to explore the many reasons victims stay in abusive relationships, and how they can muster the resources and motivation to leave. Surviving is unlike any memoir of survivorship, given its nuance, compassion, and candor. Above all, it is an exquisitely powerful testament to Gooden’s healing, survivorship, and dedication to helping others do the same.
