La violence urbaine est multiforme, du banditisme armé à la délinquance juvénile en passant par la psychopathologie quotidienne du citadin stressé. En Afrique subsaharienne, il s'agit d'un phénomène encore peu étudié, pour la simple raison que le développement urbain a connu toute son ampleur après la période des Indépendances. Désormais, le continent compte des mégalopoles dont la taille n'a rien à envier au gigantisme des agglomérations d'Amérique latine ou d'Asie. Mais sa violence urbaine reste difficile à appréhender. On a notamment du mal à distinguer la violence se produisant en ville, par exemple à Mogadiscio dans un pays en guerre, de la violence produite par la ville comme à Lagos ou Kano, deux des cas étudiés dans cet ouvrage. L'objectif du présent essai est justement d'analyser le rapport de la violence à la croissance urbaine. Il y est démontré que la violence accompagne toujours le développement urbain et qu'elle en fait même intrinsèquement partie, mettant en évidence une forte corrélation avec la taille des villes. Le problème n'est d'ailleurs pas propre à l'Afrique, quoiqu'il en ait adapté certaines spécificités dans le contexte d'une dilution de l'autorité politique, d'un relâchement du contrôle social et, parfois, d'une inadaptation à la modernité du cosmopolitisme citadin. Fondamentalement, la question plonge ses racines dans des dynamiques locales dont il ne faut pas négliger la puissance au profit d'une optique par trop mondialisée. Si une approche globale a ses mérites, la théorie du complot n'aide guère à comprendre la complexité des procédures sociales, politiques, économiques et spatiales d'une violence produite par la ville.
