This book explores how gender intersects with political violence, and particularly terrorism. We ask how gender relations and understandings of femininity and masculinity influence political violence, which includes politics related to terrorism, state terrorism, and genocide. We investigate how women cope with and influence the politics of terrorism and genocide. The book’s goals are descriptive and analytical. We (1) describe in what ways women are present (and/or perceived as absent) in political contexts involving violence, and (2) analyze what gender assumptions, identities, and frames women face and themselves express and act upon regarding political violence encountered in their lives. The manuscript is divided into seven chapters: introduction, women as victims/survivors of violence, women as perpetrators of violence, women in social movements responding to violence, women politicians leading policy regarding violence, the public opinion of women and men concerning violence, and a conclusion. Each chapter explores the intersection between gender and terrorism through the lens of the chapter focus.

This book examines some of the key issues around violence at work which have emerged in the new millennium, including the events of September 11th 2001 and other terrorist-related incidents, identifying these as an extreme form of workplace violence. It builds upon the expanded typology of workplace violence in Violence at Work (Willan, 2001), and identifies four types of workplace violence: intrusive, external violence including terrorism; consumer/client-related violence; staff-related violence; organizational violence. This book also addresses some key emerging and controversial issues facing those concerned with workplace violence, including staff who abuse those in their care, domestic violence spilling over into the workplace, violence against aid and humanitarian workers, and organizations who are themselves abusive to their staff and service users as well as oppressive of their surrounding communities. Based on interviews and organizational research, this book examines workplace violence in four of Great Britain's most violence-prone occupations: the police, accident and emergency personnel, social workers, and mental health professionals. The central finding for all the occupations is that the problem is less one of the frequency of actual physical attacks, although they do occur, but more of ongoing anxiety regarding their possibility. Linked to this is the sense of vulnerability in performing occupational duties. There are aspects of the roles of all four professions that place them in potentially volatile situations. Although employees can be trained to reduce the likelihood of an escalation toward violence, employees must be trained in how to deal with various types of violence as they occur. Further, managers should not assume that when violence does occur it is because the employee did not act appropriately to prevent it. The book concludes that the problem of workplace violence in the professions examined is so complex and diverse that there are no "quick fixes." What is clear is that the problem exists and causes considerable anxiety among workers. Employing organizations must recognize this and address it in workplace policies and procedures.
