This Element consists of ten short pieces written by prominent discourse analysts in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each piece focuses on a different aspect of the pandemic, from the debate over wearing face masks to the metaphors used by politicians and journalists in different countries to talk about the virus. Each of the pieces also makes use of a different approach to analysing discourse (e.g. Critical Discourse Analysis, Genre Analysis, Corpus Assisted Discourse Analysis) and demonstrates how that approach can be applied to a small set of data. The aim of the Element is to show how the range of tools available to discourse analysts can be brought to bear on a pressing, 'real-world' problem, and how discourse analysis can contribute to formulating 'real-world' solutions to the problem.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of our everyday lives – from the political to the economic to the social. Using a multimodal discourse analysis approach, this dynamic collection examines various discourses, modes and media in circulation during the early stages of the pandemic, and how these have impacted our daily lives in terms of the various meanings they express. Examples include how national and international news organisations communicate important information about the virus and the crisis, the public’s reactions to such communications, the resultant (counter-)discourses as manifested in social media posts and memes, as well as the impact social distancing policies and mobility restrictions have had on people’s communication and interaction practices. The book offers a synoptic view of how the pandemic was communicated, represented and (re-)contextualised across different spheres, and ultimately hopes to help account for the significant changes we are continuing to witness in our everyday lives as the pandemic unfolds. This volume will appeal primarily to scholars in the field of (multimodal) discourse analysis. It will also be of interest to researchers and graduate students in other fields whose work focuses on the use of multimodal artefacts for communication and meaning making. Drawing on approaches from Linguistic Pragmatics, Critical Discourse Analysis, Conceptual Metaphor Theory, Social Actor Representation Theory, and Framing Theory, this book critically explores the various linguistic devices and pragmatic strategies that concern meaning generation in the context of Chinese official media discourse. The volume rests on eight chapters that—using different analytical lenses, with either a culture-specific perspective or a cross-cultural one—take language analysis as their point of departure, in order to investigate how meaning is generated in situated discourse, such as media accounts about specific issues within the socio-political, cultural, or economic sphere. Each chapter is empirically grounded, and either focuses on a specific genre, such as the documentary and the press conference, or explores social and political events and initiatives that have been topical in recent years: the Covid-19 and SARS crises, the US-China trade conflict, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and the 2021 Hong Kong electoral system reform. By bringing back the linguistic analysis to the core of the analytical approach, the volume shows the interconnection of text and context, reminding the reader about the key role of language users both on the production and reception side. This volume takes up the challenge of surveying the present state of a variety of approaches to the identification, analysis and interpretation of metaphor across communication channels, situational contexts, genres and social spheres. It reflects three foremost trends of present metaphor research, namely the communicative approach, the cognitive modelling approach and the multimodality approach. These trends are considered as areas of research emerging on the ground of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory, initiated by Lakoff. The book intends to show their concomitances as well as mark their diversifying paths. The aim is to bring about and make apparent the many connections among assumingly different trends stemming from CMT. Whereas discrepancies between communicative and conceptual perspectives might seem irredeemable, the book emphasizes and claims that the background framework of CMT provides a solid foundation for collaboration and mutual influence.
