Virginia Woolf as a Process-Oriented Thinker: Parallels Between Woolf’s Fiction and Process Philosophy introduces Virginia Woolf as a nondualist and process-oriented thinker whose ideas are, despite no direct influence, strikingly similar to those of Alfred North Whitehead. Veronika Krajícková argues that in their respective fields, literature and philosophy, Woolf and Whitehead both criticized the materialist turn of their time and attempted to reattribute importance to experience and undermine long-rooted dualisms such as subject and object, the animate and the inanimate, the human and the nonhuman, or the self and the other. By erasing the gaps between these dualities, the two thinkers anticipated the poststructuralist thought with which Woolf has been anachronically associated in the last decades. Krajícková shows that there is no need to analyze Woolf’s fiction via critical and philosophical theories that developed much later. This book demonstrates that Woolf and Whitehead’s ideas may help us adopt more ecologically friendly, selfless, intersubjective, and harmless modes of being in the present day. Both figures emphasize the intrinsic value and importance of each constituent of reality and teach us to appreciate the aesthetic values dispersed throughout our environment.

Towards the end of her life, Virginia Woolf defined her philosophy-the constant idea that makes her a writer. She wrote that this idea had given her the strongest pleasure known to [her]. She called these exceptional moments, or moments of being. Thomas Nail contends that Woolf is a philosopher of being. And these "moments of being" as forming a unique process philosophy of motion. In these moments the anthropocentric division between humans and nature dissolves into metastable patterns-without essences or vital forces. Matter becomes dynamic, and what originally appeared solid is perceived as woven, porous, and fluid. Nail concludes by addressing some of the ethical and political consequences of these moments in Woolf 's thinking. In the end, the book contends that Woolf offers us an absolutely unique philosophical and aesthetic understanding of phenomena, including nature, culture, desire, gender, writing/reading, consciousness, art, ecology, and sensation. One might believe that museum studies is a stable field of academic inquiry based on a set of familiar institutional forms and functions. But as institutions museums have never been stable or singular, and neither has the discipline of museum studies. Museum studies as a field of academic inquiry has received little critical attention. One result of this neglect has arguably been a lack of invention in museum studies; another is the distancing of academic museum studies from museum practice. Doing Museology Differently charts a different course. A critical‐creative reflection on academic practice, the book takes the form of a narrative account of museological fieldwork. A research story unfolds, challenging academic conventions at the level of its own presentation: the book combines critical museum visiting with an autobiographical voice. The identification of a previously underexplored interdisciplinary space leads the author to experiment with museum studies using contemporary developments in the theory and practice of human geography. Virginia Woolf’s Microgenesis engages with Virginia Woolf’s writings in the context of her own unique methodological approach to mind, to meaning, and to making whole. This volume argues that this preoccupation with the metaphysics of “wholeness,” a dread, indeed, of both fragmentation and what endures as an organic unity, places Woolf’s writings alongside Jason Brown’s microgenesis, formulated as a formative, emergent, and dynamic process of cognitive activity. However, crucially, it is not by assembling multiple flows of sense data into more complex constructions that we might perceive the objective world but by sculpting away the unfit to reveal the structure of the world as a surfacing reality. In so many ways, Woolf’s novels represent an enactment of microgenetic theory, demonstrating and alerting us to the mind/brain state as a process of continual unfolding through progressive differentiation and discrimination to a distinct configuration – albeit one which may be deemed imperfect. That is not to say that Woolf’s fictions should be understood as anticipating Brown’s formulation of microgenetic theory as such but that they should be understood as illuminating the adaptive and evolutionary significance, and signification, of perceptual microgenesis in her various modes of theorisation – that is, her processes of tunnelling and transmuting, moments of being/nonbeing, and depth‐and‐surface. If ontogeny (individual development) recapitulates phylogeny (species development), this volume demonstrates that Woolf provides the momentariness of microgenesis to her fictions, a process which recapitulates both. Virginia Woolf’s Microgenesis is essential reading for researchers and students in Woolf Studies, process philosophy, new materialisms, literary theory, and modernist literature.
