A ideia deste livro surgiu durante a elaboração do plano de ensino da disciplina Virtudes e Dilemas Morais na Administração, oferecida pela primeira vez para estudantes de mestrado e doutorado do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Administração da Esag/Udesc no segundo semestre de 2019. Foi minha primeira tentativa de expor em sala de aula uma abordagem que vem se revelando um dos caminhos mais abrangentes para vivenciarmos de maneira real e efetiva a dimensão ética na Administração, para lidarmos com os dilemas que enfrentamos todos os dias na gestão das organizações e de nossas vidas, e desenvolvermos as capacidades necessárias para tomar as melhores decisões. Este livro pretende apresentar ao público brasileiro uma amostra dessa abordagem. O fio que dá sustentação à obra é a ética das virtudes, incluindo temas correlatos que buscam conversar com ela. A reunião dos quinze artigos com temas tão variados é difusa, porém não é dispersiva. A Parte I oferece uma breve introdução, panorama histórico e alguns desdobramentos atuais sobre a ética das virtudes na Administração Pública e Business Ethics, contextualizando os demais textos que se seguem. A Parte II, “Virtudes e Organizações”, oferece reflexões e análises do universo organizacional e suas interfaces – o administrador, a tecnologia, fusões e aquisições, gamificação e mindfulness – na perspectiva das virtudes. A Parte III, “Virtudes e Dilemas Morais em Economia e Administração Pública”, explora outras áreas e temas, abrangendo a Escola Austríaca de Economia, a judicialização da política no STF, dilemas morais na gestão pública, o price gouging e a relação entre a ética e a Administração Pública com base em três modelos normativos. A Parte IV, “Educação Moral e Administração”, enfoca a possibilidade de se desenvolver a dimensão moral/ética nas pessoas, seja nos cursos de graduação em Administração, na utilização da literatura para a formação do imaginário nos presídios, ou como iniciativa do governo. Por fim, após a apresentação dos autores, o leitor poderá conhecer os temas e referências trabalhados na disciplina Virtudes e Dilemas Morais na Administração do PPGA/Esag/Udesc, que originou o livro, servindo também como um guia de leitura para se aprofundar no assunto.

Para a Monarquia espanhola, o estabelecimento de instituições civis e eclesiásticas e a administração de Justiça na América foram essenciais. Mas seu funcionamento não foi automático, pois foram necessários homens capazes de consolidá-las e de perpetuá-las. Papéis selados. Carreira jurídica, estratégias de reputação e poder na Nova Espanha (1580-1730) demonstra a respeito que, nesse processo, os juristas tiveram um papel crucial, pois se, por um lado, deviam fazer cumprir as leis, por outro, tinham a capacidade de modificar convenientemente sua aplicação, de acordo com as circunstâncias locais. Esse papel de intermediários entre a Monarquia e os grupos sociais novo-hispânicos do século XVII, época de recomposição social, de integração e extensão de instituições, em especial as eclesiásticas, levou juristas e clérigos advogados a converterem-se em personagens de primeira ordem no funcionamento do regime colonial. Daí a importância deste livro, ao se ocupar da análise dos mecanismos e dinâmicas de que se valeram os juristas para ganhar reconhecimento, altos cargos e prebendas na burocracia vice-reinal e na Igreja. Empregando uma análise microssocial das carreiras, assim como das redes sociais dos homens de leis, Marcelo Rocha demonstra que sua inserção na maquinaria burocrática foi o resultado de uma estratégia relacional em que o prestígio de quem os recomendava e o testemunho de personagens socialmente aceitáveis se traduziram em benefícios e honra social.
