The anti-hero is John Butler, back from the war in the Far East branded a coward, a man for whom heroin had become a means of retreat from the horrors of battle. An addict now, he seeks help at a clinic and listens to the oft-repeated exhortation to find a consuming interest into which he can channel all his energies and aspirations. Butler concentrates on the one interest the war has left him - heroin. The combination of his past contacts as a chemistry student at University and his present contact as a drug pusher pave the way to an obsession. Provided with a secret laboratory by the head of the drug organization which employs him, he succeeds in perfecting a technique for producing the purest heroin ever refined. This however, is only the beginning of Butler's cure.

This book offers a critical examination of certain ideas and values-such as remembering, forgiveness, story-telling through Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, etc.-that undergird the transitional practices and mechanisms of societies emerging from conflicts. It does so by making the survivors' experience the supreme and ultimate judge of the legitimacy of such practices. While many scholars have dealt with these topics, this book provides a unique perspective on them by using personal stories, narratives and memoirs of the survivors as a checking point of the theoretical elaboration of these ideas and values. By means of an existential phenomenological analysis of the situation of survivors of gross human rights violations, the book assesses how many resources are still available to them, so that they can contribute to the processes of reconstruction and reconciliation of their societies. This analysis constitutes the background for reading the rest of the book, which challenges some assumptions and presumptions of transitional practices such as healing through truth-telling, or providing justice through reparations. It does so by presenting nuanced suggestions on the ways survivors can participate in the reconstruction-reconciliation processes, without jeopardizing their own well-being.

Warcraft and the Fragility of Virtue presents, for the first time, a well-developed and effective Aristotelian perspective on reasoning about war and warfare. Author G. Scott Davis first sketches the fundamentals of as Aristotelian approach to the ethics of war, arguing that the virtue is a craft, of itself fragile, that must be sustained by a community that makes the highest demands upon itself. Introduced as a criterion for evaluating alliances and international relations, the concept of moral community is also of the highest significance for interpreting those ruptures within the community, including resistance and rebellion, that arise concomitantly with the prospect and onset of war.

In A Diabolical Voice, Justine L. Trombley traces the afterlife of the Mirror of Simple Souls, which circulated anonymously for two centuries in four languages, though not without controversy or condemnation. Widely recognized as one of the most unusual and important mystical treatises of the late Middle Ages, the Mirror was condemned in Paris in 1310 as a heretical work, and its author, Marguerite Porete, was burned at the stake. Trombley identifies alongside the work's increasing positive reception a parallel trend of opposition and condemnation centered specifically around its Latin translation. She's discovered fourteenth- and fifteenth-century theologians, canon lawyers, inquisitors, and other churchmen who were entirely ignorant of the Mirror's author and its condemnation and saw in the work dangerous heresies that demanded refutation and condemnation of their own. Using new evidence from the Mirror's largely overlooked Latin manuscript tradition, A Diabolical Voice charts the range of negative reactions to the Mirror, from confiscations and physical destruction to academic refutations and vicious denunciations of its supposedly fiendish doctrines. This parallel story of opposition shows how heresy remained an integral part of the Mirror's history well beyond the events of 1310, revealing how seriously churchmen took Marguerite Porete's ideas on their own terms, in contexts entirely removed from Marguerite's identity and her fate.
