Although difficult, change in academic structures is necessary today, especially in fast-changing fields today such as biology, computing, management, the social sciences, and others. This includes changes within existing organizations as well as creation of new structures and reorganizations or eliminations of older ones. This narrative attempts first to document the historical rise of an organization, Georgia Tech’s College of Computing, that has touched and successfully changed the lives of thousands of people. Second, it aims to identify and explicate some of what has led to this widely acknowledged success. The book provides a chronological narrative that highlights major changes taken under each successive leader. These changes have built on one another, knowingly or otherwise, to create a growing organization that rivals in size and prominence longer established parts of the university. The case study, while of an academic organization focused on computing, provides general lessons applicable almost anywhere. Topics and features: Discusses the nature and uses of visions, both general and specific Shows how visions can be used to drive specific actions and resource allocations Illustrates the choice and use of enduring organizational principles Outlines a simple strategic-planning method and its application Indicates results of this overall approach This book will be of interest to anyone interested in organizational change, especially in academia, and to those interested in Georgia Tech. It will also appeal to policymakers in education, government, and industry; as well as anyone interested in the historical growth of the computing milieu broadly. Peter A. Freeman was Founding Dean and Professor in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech from 1990 to 2002. Today he is an Emeritus Dean and Professor.

Feminist Academics written by Louise Morley and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-11-01 with Social Science categories.

This text brings together leading feminists who explore questions of feminist interventions in organisations of knowledge production, covering both the structure and culture of academic institutions and the social divisions between women. Feminism is located as a force for change, empowering women to gain a political understanding and providing a methodology for new approaches to teaching, learning, research and writing in the academy. Contributions demonstrate how an analysis of the micropolitics of the academy in terms of power, policies, discourses, pedagogy and interpersonal relationships provides a framework for de- privatising women's experience and influencing change. Using theoretical constructs and their own biographies and experience, the contributors present predicaments, inequalities and strategies. Power and influence are considered in conjunction with gender, 'race', social class and sexuality.

Professional demands on school administrators continue to multiply exponentially. Effective administrators require solid preparation programs, continuing professional development, extensive experience, mentoring, and the support of supervisor and school colleagues. Chapter 1, "Intuitive Ways of Knowing," references research on intuition, including information about levels of intuitive input, and the different stages involved in intuitive explorations. Chapter 2, "Developing Behaviors of Intuitive Leadership," examines intuitive leaders and their abilities to "read" the environment. Some behaviors characteristic of intuitive leaders include recognition of timing, a willingness to act, understanding the importance of shared values, embracing shared leadership, trust, collaboration, and a balance in personal and positional political power. Chapter 3, "Powerful Communication: Reading the Silent Language," demonstrates that communication dexterity is paramount to a leader's success, and provides insight into several forms of communication, including listening, speaking, writing, body language, and silence. Intuitive skills can be applied to practical situations involving the art of communication. Chapter 4, "Intuition and the Paradoxes of Leadership," addresses the major paradoxes of leadership, including the leader-versus-manager orientation, autocrat-versus-indecisive decision-making styles, "facilitator-versus-obstructor," and delegating-versus-leader-centered approaches to solving problems. Leaders must provide opportunities for both themselves and their constituents to become skilled in problem solving and decision making. Leaders must empower the staff to make possible the delegation of authority. Effective leaders should realize the important benefits that result from creating collaborative climates.
