There is a growing social interest in developing vision-based vehicle guidance systems for improving traffic safety and efficiency and the environment. Ex amples of vision-based vehicle guidance systems include collision warning systems, steering control systems for tracking painted lane marks, and speed control systems for preventing rear-end collisions. Like other guidance systems for aircraft and trains, these systems are ex pected to increase traffic safety significantly. For example, safety improve ments of aircraft landing processes after the introduction of automatic guidance systems have been reported to be 100 times better than prior to installment. Although the safety of human lives is beyond price, the cost for automatic guidance could be compensated by decreased insurance costs. It is becoming more important to increase traffic safety by decreasing the human driver's load in our society, especially with an increasing population of senior people who continue to drive. The second potential social benefit is the improvement of traffic efficiency by decreasing the spacing between vehicles without sacrificing safety. It is reported, for example, that four times the efficiency is expected if the spacing between cars is controlled automatically at 90 cm with a speed of 100 kmjh compared to today's typical manual driving. Although there are a lot of tech nical, psychological, and social issues to be solved before realizing the high density jhigh-speed traffic systems described here, highly efficient highways are becoming more important because of increasing traffic congestion.

This book surveys the history of automatic vehicle guidance based on the processing of visual information, starting from the very first projects worldwide up to the latest developments. It also presents the ARGO prototype vehicle, developed at the University of Parma (Italy), and describes its equipment, setup, and performance. ARGO has been equipped with cameras and processing systems to drive autonomously in real traffic conditions. The complete system has been tested on public roads, during a tour in which ARGO drove itself along the Italian highway network for more than 2000 km. A detailed analysis of this trip is also included.

This book presents the most important milestones of the research on automated and autonomous driving in the United States, Japan and Europe throughout five decades (1950-2000). Drawing on sources from the automotive industry, electrical engineering, the robotics and AI-domain and military institutions, it retraces the transition from the guidance-cable approach to vehicle-based sensor and vision systems. Giving a detailed overview of the technical concepts, artefacts, research vehicles and robots, the book presents the transnational engineering efforts that started long before Silicon Valley entered the field. In addition, the book also uniquely details the role of the military in the domain of vehicle automation. This all ensures the book is of great interest to historians of technology, practitioners in engineering disciplines, scholars working in mobility studies, journalists, and political decision makers.

Pedestrian Protection Systems (PPSs) are on-board systems aimed at detecting and tracking people in the surroundings of a vehicle in order to avoid potentially dangerous situations. These systems, together with other Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) such as lane departure warning or adaptive cruise control, are one of the most promising ways to improve traffic safety. By the use of computer vision, cameras working either in the visible or infra-red spectra have been demonstrated as a reliable sensor to perform this task. Nevertheless, the variability of human’s appearance, not only in terms of clothing and sizes but also as a result of their dynamic shape, makes pedestrians one of the most complex classes even for computer vision. Moreover, the unstructured changing and unpredictable environment in which such on-board systems must work makes detection a difficult task to be carried out with the demanded robustness. In this brief, the state of the art in PPSs is introduced through the review of the most relevant papers of the last decade. A common computational architecture is presented as a framework to organize each method according to its main contribution. More than 300 papers are referenced, most of them addressing pedestrian detection and others corresponding to the descriptors (features), pedestrian models, and learning machines used. In addition, an overview of topics such as real-time aspects, systems benchmarking and future challenges of this research area are presented.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR AND HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION BASED ON MACHINE LEARNING ALGORITHMS The objective of this book is to provide the most relevant information on Human-Computer Interaction to academics, researchers, and students and for those from industry who wish to know more about the real-time application of user interface design. Human-computer interaction (HCI) is the academic discipline, which most of us think of as UI design, that focuses on how human beings and computers interact at ever-increasing levels of both complexity and simplicity. Because of the importance of the subject, this book aims to provide more relevant information that will be useful to students, academics, and researchers in the industry who wish to know more about its real-time application. In addition to providing content on theory, cognition, design, evaluation, and user diversity, this book also explains the underlying causes of the cognitive, social and organizational problems typically devoted to descriptions of rehabilitation methods for specific cognitive processes. Also described are the new modeling algorithms accessible to cognitive scientists from a variety of different areas. This book is inherently interdisciplinary and contains original research in computing, engineering, artificial intelligence, psychology, linguistics, and social and system organization as applied to the design, implementation, application, analysis, and evaluation of interactive systems. Since machine learning research has already been carried out for a decade in various applications, the new learning approach is mainly used in machine learning-based cognitive applications. Since this will direct the future research of scientists and researchers working in neuroscience, neuroimaging, machine learning-based brain mapping, and modeling, etc., this book highlights the framework of a novel robust method for advanced cross-industry HCI technologies. These implementation strategies and future research directions will meet the design and application requirements of several modern and real-time applications for a long time to come. Audience: A wide range of researchers, industry practitioners, and students will be interested in this book including those in artificial intelligence, machine learning, cognition, computer programming and engineering, as well as social sciences such as psychology and linguistics.

This book reviews recent innovations in the smart agriculture space that use the Internet of Things (IoT) and sensing to deliver Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutionsto agricultural productivity in the agricultural production hubs. In this regard, South and Southeast Asia are one of the major agricultural hubs of the world, facing challenges of climate change and feeding the fast-growing population. To address such challenges, a transboundary approach along with AI and BIG data for bioinformatics are required to increase yield and minimize pre- and post-harvest losses in intangible climates to drive the sustainable development goal (SDG) for feeding a major part of the 9 billion population by 2050 (Society 5.0 SDG 1 & 2). Therefore, this book focuses on the solution through smart IoT and AI-based agriculture including pest infestation and minimizing agricultural inputs for in-house and fields production such as light, water, fertilizer and pesticides to ensure food security aligns with environmental sustainability. It provides a sound understanding for creating new knowledge in line with comprehensive research and education orientation on how the deployment of tiny sensors, AI/Machine Learning (ML), controlled UAVs, and IoT setups for sensing, tracking, collection, processing, and storing information over cloud platforms for nurturing and driving the pace of smart agriculture in this current time. The book will appeal to several audiences and the contents are designed for researchers, graduates, and undergraduate students working in any area of machine learning, deep learning in agricultural engineering, smart agriculture, and environmental science disciplines. Utmost care has been taken to present a varied range of resource areas along with immense insights into the impact and scope of IoT, AI and ML in the growth of intelligent digital farming and smart agriculture which will give comprehensive information to the targeted readers.
