This book examines how the experiences of hearing voices and seeing visions were understood within the cultural, literary, and intellectual contexts of the medieval and early modern periods. In the Middle Ages, these experiences were interpreted according to frameworks that could credit visionaries or voice-hearers with spiritual knowledge, and allow them to inhabit social roles that were as much desired as feared. Voice-hearing and visionary experience offered powerful creative possibilities in imaginative literature and were often central to the writing of inner, spiritual lives. Ideas about such experience were taken up and reshaped in response to the cultural shifts of the early modern period. These essays, which consider the period 1100 to 1700, offer diverse new insights into a complex, controversial, and contested category of human experience, exploring literary and spiritual works as illuminated by scientific and medical writings, natural philosophy and theology, and the visual arts. In extending and challenging contemporary bio-medical perspectives through the insights and methodologies of the arts and humanities, the volume offers a timely intervention within the wider project of the medical humanities. Domestic devotion has become an increasingly important area of research in recent years, with the publication of a number of significant studies on the early modern period in particular. This Special Issue aims to build on these works and to expand their range, both geographically and chronologically. This collection focuses on lived religion and the devotional practices found in the domestic settings of late medieval and early modern Europe. More particularly, it investigates the degree to which the experience of personal or familial religious practice in the domestic realm intersected with the more public expression of faith in liturgical or communal settings. Its broad geographical range (spanning northern, southern, central and eastern Europe) includes practices related to Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Shakespeare's visionary women, usually confined to the periphery, claim centre stage to voice their sleeping and waking dreams. These women recount their visions through acts of rhetoric, designed to persuade and, crucially, to directly intervene in political action. The visions discussed in this Element are therefore not simply moments of inspiration but of political intercession. The vision performed or recounted on stage offers a proleptic moment of female speech that forces audiences to confront questions of narrative truth and women's testimony. This Element interrogates the scepticism that Shakespeare's visionary women face and considers the ways in which they perform the truth of their experiences to a hostile onstage audience. It concludes that prophecy gives women a brief moment of access to political conversations in which they are not welcome as they wrest narrative control from male speakers and speak their truth aloud.

Shakespearean Ethics in Extremity addresses forms of ethical experience on the Shakespearean stage. Early modern theater traffics in the vicarious experience of ethics, often ethics in some extreme or impossible circumstance. It does so not by parading concepts across the stage or ventriloquizing ideas from the philosophical tradition but by bringing to life stories and characters and worlds, by crafting scenes and moments of great emotional and cognitive intensity. What does it feel like to be enjoined to avenge your father's murder? What is it like to banish your daughter or disavow your community? To murder? James Kearney contends that Shakespearean theater, fundamentally oriented to the experiential, invites its audiences to entertain and to be entertained by what the philosopher Bernard Williams calls "a phenomenology of the ethical life." The early modern world inherited and developed rhetorical and philosophical practices geared toward the creation of immersive virtual experience. These phenomenological arts share underlying assumptions about the cultivation and management of the self as well as a straightforward orientation toward ethics. Taking up key concepts from the long history of moral philosophy -- recognition, obligation, decision, luck -- Shakespearean Ethics in Extremity brings together a discursive history of ideas and the more phenomenological realms of body and affect, environment and world. In Shakespearean theater we encounter or witness or simply have our attention called to the ethical problem of other minds, the obligation to neighbor and community, the mysteries of decision, the moral quandaries posed by epistemological uncertainty, the risk of ethico-affective relations, and the vagaries of luck. Each of these concepts points to an elemental aspect of ethical life, and they all have long and rich histories, ancient and modern. With a concentrated focus on formally inventive plays written in the later part of Shakespeare's theatrical career - King Lear, Timon of Athens, Macbeth, Pericles, The Tempest, and The Winter's Tale -- Kearney explores Shakespearean theater as an arena or lab in which the experience of ethics in extremis is simulated or reverse engineered, counterfeited or created.

Voice-hearing experiences associated with psychosis are highly varied, frequently distressing, poorly understood, and deeply stigmatised, even within mental health settings. Voices in Psychosis responds to the urgent need for new ways of listening to and making sense of these experiences. It brings multiple disciplinary, clinical, and experiential perspectives to bear on an original and extraordinarily rich body of testimony: transcripts of forty in-depth phenomenological interviews conducted with people who hear voices and who have accessed Early Intervention in Psychosis services. The book addresses the social, clinical, and research contexts in which the interviews took place, thoroughly investigating the embodied, multisensory, affective, linguistic, spatial, and relational qualities of voice-hearing experiences. The nature, politics, and consequences of these analytic endeavours is a focus of critical reflection throughout. Each chapter gives a multifaceted insight into the experiences of voice-hearers in the North East of England and to their wider resonance in contexts ranging from medieval mysticism to Amazonian shamanism, from the nineteenth-century novel to the twenty-first century survivor movement.
