This book provides a comparative perspective on the way ideas of gender relations and identities shaped the struggle over resources, cultural practices, and political rights that followed the end of slavery in the Atlantic world. Throughout the nineteenth century many people in the Atlantic world were involved in the effort to create a new world, one without slavery in which all people were individuals and equal to each other. The contributors to this work argue that in the era of emancipation understanding of freedom and the individual was almost always constructed in gendered terms. Virtually all the regions bordering the Atlantic were re-shaped by participation in the slave trade. The essays examine the process of emancipation throughout the Atlantic world including North America, the British and French Caribbean, Cuba, Puerto Rico, South and West Africa, and parts of Latin America, all of whom had differing influences on slave culture and in turn on slaves' perceptions of gender. Gender was central to enslaved people's understanding of slavery, although the experiences in different parts of the Atlantic world were not identical and often followed the patterns of the slave owners. The expectation of what it meant to be free was often quite different for men and for women, and these concepts shaped many of the struggles over resources, cultural practices, religion and political rights. Gendered assumptions were also part of the vision of abolitionists. The military action that in many cases ended the practice of slavery gave men the advantage of becoming the head of a household so that even in freedom women continued to be subordinate to men. The contributors show that emancipationserved to define the meaning of freedom, although it rarely matched the visions of liberty expected by enslaved people.

Visions of Glory brings together twenty-two images and twenty-two brisk essays, each essay connecting an image to the events that unfolded during a particular year of the Civil War. The book focuses on a diverse set of images that include a depiction of former slaves whipping their erstwhile overseer distributed by an African American publisher, a census graph published in the New York Times, and a cutout of a child’s hand sent by a southern mother to her husband at the front. The essays in this collection reveal how wartime women and men created both written accounts and a visual register to make sense of this pivotal period. The collection proceeds chronologically, providing a nuanced history by highlighting the multiple meanings an assorted group of writers and readers discerned from the same set of circumstances. In so doing, this volume assembles contingent and fractured visions of the Civil War, but its differing perspectives also reveal a set of overlapping concerns. A number of essays focus in particular on African American engagements with visual culture. The collection also emphasizes the role that women played in making, disseminating, or interpreting wartime images. While every essay explores the relationship between image and word, several contributions focus on the ways in which Civil War images complicate an understanding of canonical writers such as Emerson, Melville, and Whitman.

This book offers an examination of the role of emancipation in the study and practice of security, focusing on the issue of environmental change. The end of the Cold War created a context in which traditional approaches to security could be systematically questioned. This period also saw a concerted attempt in IR to argue that environmental change constituted a threat to security. This book argues that such a notion is problematic as it suggests that a universal definition of security is possible, which prevents a recognition of security as a site of contestation, in which a range of actors articulate alternative visions of who or what is in need of being secured. If security is understood and approached in traditional terms - as the territorial preservation of the nation-state from external threat - then it is indeed difficult to see how environmental issues would benefit from being placed on states' security agenda. If, however, security is defined in terms of the emancipation of the most vulnerable individuals from contingent structural oppressions, then drawing a relationship between environmental change and security may be beneficial for redressing those environmental issues and prioritising the needs of those most at risk from the manifestations of global environmental change. This book takes the limitations of contemporary approaches to the relationship between the environment and security as its starting point, and seeks to do two things. First, it aims to illustrate the ways in which arguments over approaches to environmental issues can be viewed as contestation over the meaning of 'security' in particular political contexts. Central here is the composition and assumptions of the dominant security discourse to emerge regarding those issues: a framework of meaning for the most important forms of action on behalf of a particular group, defining the terms for meaningful contestation and negotiation about security itself within that group. As such, the book attempts to illustrate the dynamics of competition over the meaning of security with reference to environmental issues, particularly focusing on instances of political change in the dominant security discourse through which that issue is approached. In the process the author points to the central role of these dominant security discourses in underpinning the most practically significant actions regarding environmental issues such as deforestation and global climate change. The book employs methodological tools that enable a focus on how particular frameworks of meaning are constituted and become dominant; how they provide a lens through which various issues are approached; and how discourses most consistent with redressing environmental change and the suffering of the most vulnerable might come to provide the framework through which security is viewed in particular contexts. This book will be of much interest to students of Critical Security Studies, geography, sociology, IR and Political Science in general.
