This book offers a critical reflection of the historical genesis, transformation, and problématique of “humanity” in the transatlantic world, with a particular eye on cultural representations. “Humanity,” the essays show, was consistently embedded in networks of actors and cultural practices, and its meanings have evolved in step with historical processes such as globalization, cultural imperialism, the transnationalization of activism, and the spread of racism and nationalism. Visions of Humanity applies a historical lens on objects, sounds, and actors to provide a more nuanced understanding of the historical tensions and struggles involved in constructing, invoking, and instrumentalizing the “we” of humanity.

Where is the world going? Do people have a clear direction of life? The world constantly talks about peace in the world. Yet it still practices the business of solving its problems through wars, fighting and killing. Governments are ineffective and leading their people in the wrong direction. Many books have offered theories to fix the ills of the world by promoting peace, but none have inspired people to take action. This book is by a commoner written for the people from an average person's perspective.

The sequel to Duane Elgin’s bestselling classic Voluntary Simplicity, which changed the lives of thousands and was called the “bible” of the simplicity movement by the Wall Street Journal, Promise Ahead looks beneath the headlines to reveal the deeper currents now changing our lives. Elgin sees two powerful sets of trends converging in the coming decades. The first set he calls “adversity trends.” These include 1. Global climate changes that threaten our food supply 2. Massive human population 3. Mass extinction of species 4. Rapid depletion of crucial natural resources 5. Civil unrest caused by global poverty. The second set he calls “opportunity trends.” These include 1. Recognition of the universe as a living system 2. The quiet revolution toward simpler ways of living 3. Use of the Internet as a tool for social awareness and change 4. Growing efforts toward reconciliation of racial, gender, religious, and other differences If we meet these unprecedented challenges, we can make a dramatic leap in our evolutionary journey and will have a very promising future.

Strategic Visions For Human Rights written by Geoff Gilbert and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-13 with Law categories.

Strategic Visions for Human Rights takes a multi-disciplinary approach to future directions for human rights. It looks beyond what international human rights treaties have so far established and considers the context in which rights in the twenty-first century might develop to meet needs. The book examines how international law might be utilized to protect groups rather than just individual members of the group and it also calls into question the liberal positivist approach to international law that provides the framework for human rights norms. The book is written and published in honour of Professor Kevin Boyle. It celebrates his long career in human rights law both as an academic and a practising barrister. Professor Boyle has taken numerous cases on human rights issues to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg and has long been involved in human rights aspects of the peace process in Northern Ireland. He has published widely on human rights issues, focusing on freedom of expression and religion and non-discrimination. The contributors to this volume are well-known academics in the field of human rights and include Francesca Klug, Conor Gearty, David Beetham and Asbjorn Eide. Amongst some of the issues addressed in the book are the future of the European Court of Human Rights, the role of academics play in engendering transition to post-conflict democratic states, and human rights and religious pluralism.

Human Purpose And Transhuman Potential written by Ted Chu and has been published by Red Wheel/Weiser this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-01 with Social Science categories.

For millennia, great thinkers have contemplated the meaning and purpose of human existence; but while most assumed that humanity was the end point of creation or the pinnacle of evolution, Ted Chu makes the provocative claim that the human race may in fact be a means rather than an end—that humankind will give rise to evolutionary successors. In this wide-ranging and authoritative work, Chu reexamines the question of human purpose in light of the extraordinary developments of science and technology. Arguing that a deep understanding of our place in the universe is required to navigate the magnitude of the choices that lie ahead, he surveys human wisdom from both East and West, traces the evolutionary trajectory that has led to this point, and explores the potentials emerging on the scientific frontier. The book addresses the legitimate fears and concerns of “playing God” but embraces the possibility of transcending biological forms and becoming or creating entirely new life-forms.
