It explains how unremarkable sights and sounds can easily become transformed into monsters and spirits, and how fragile reality can be even in everyday life. You'll learn about common hallucinations that happen to almost everyone, see how memories and experiences that seem utterly real can be created from virtually nothing, and discover the thin line between the strange and the ordinary, 'reality' and the unreal. This fascinating guide to the world of the extraordinary is essential reading for sceptics and believers alike.

Daydreams & Nightmares collects the rarest work from Little Nemo In Slumberland creator Winsor McCay's historic career. A fantasist of the first rank, McCay was a key pioneer in the histories of both comics and animation. He had a fascination with dreams that extended beyond his newspaper strip Little Nemo in Slumberland, and it was a fascination as compelling as that of Freud, Jung and Adler's, as proven in the pages of Daydreams & Nightmares. McCay's dream-inspired strips, illustrations and cartoons feature rarebit-induced nightmares, playful "what-ifs," moralistic panoramas, pictorial allegories and other fantastic visions.

Years ago, with special fondness, I hunted near the village of Glinnoje, which is about twenty versts from my estate. It is probably the best hunting area in the whole counties. After searching all the fields and bushes for game, I went regularly to evening evening to the moorland - it was the only moorland in the whole area - and only went from there to my hospitable innkeeper, the village school of Glinnoje, where I in the hunting season always took place. From the moor I had scarcely two versts to go to the village; the path led through a lowland, and only half way up I had to climb over a not very high hill. On this hill is a small country estate, which consists of an uninhabited mansion and a garden. I almost always passed by at sunset, and the house, with the boarded-up shutters, bathed in the rays of the evening sun, always reminded me of a blind old man who had crawled out of his closet to warm himself in the sun.

Folklore And The Fantastic In Nineteenth Century British Fiction written by Jason Marc Harris and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

Jason Marc Harris's ambitious book argues that the tensions between folk metaphysics and Enlightenment values produce the literary fantastic. Demonstrating that a negotiation with folklore was central to the canon of British literature, he explicates the complicated rhetoric associated with folkloric fiction. His analysis includes a wide range of writers, including James Barrie, William Carleton, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Sheridan Le Fanu, Neil Gunn, George MacDonald, William Sharp, Robert Louis Stevenson, and James Hogg. These authors, Harris suggests, used folklore to articulate profound cultural ambivalence towards issues of class, domesticity, education, gender, imperialism, nationalism, race, politics, religion, and metaphysics. Harris's analysis of the function of folk metaphysics in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century narratives reveals the ideological agendas of the appropriation of folklore and the artistic potential of superstition in both folkloric and literary contexts of the supernatural.

Available for the first time in trade paperback, the final volume in a five-book set collecting the complete fiction of William Hope Hodgson, an influential early twentieth-century author of science fiction, horror, and the fantastic. William Hope Hodgson was, like his contemporaries Algernon Blackwood and Arthur Machen, one of the most important, prolific, and influential fantasists of the early twentieth century. His dark and unsettling short stories and novels were shaped in large part by personal experience (a professional merchant mariner for much of his life, many of Hodgson’s tales are set at sea), and his work evokes a disturbing sense of the amorphous and horrific unknown. While his nautical adventure fiction was very popular during his lifetime, the supernatural and cosmic horror he is most remembered for only became well known after his death, mainly due to the efforts of writers like H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, who often praised his work and cited it as an influence on their own. By the latter half of the twentieth century, it was only his weird fiction that remained in print, and his vast catalog of non-supernatural stories was extremely hard to find. Night Shade Books’s five-volume series presents all of Hodgson’s unique and timeless fiction. Each volume contains one of Hodgson's novels, along with a selection of thematically-linked short fiction, including a number of works reprinted for the first time since their original publication. The final book of the five-volume set, The Dream of X and Other Fantastic Visions, collects all of Hodgson’s miscellaneous writings, "revisions”, and altered works for US publication, including The Dream of X, a condensed, Hodgson-edited version of The Night Land. The Complete Fiction of William Hope Hodgson is published by Night Shade Books in the following volumes: The Boats of the “Glen Carrig” and Other Nautical Adventures The House on the Borderland and Other Mysterious Places The Ghost Pirates and Other Revenants of the Sea The Night Land and Other Romances The Dream of X and Other Fantastic Visions

The present volume insists on the policies derived from the social ideas generated by myths, the updating of myths as an arsenal of social pedagogy, on the ethnic condition of the relevance of myths, but also on the resumption by mass media of the pejorative sense of the myth. This volume is part of the scientific series “Mythology and Folklore”.
