Loved for his decidedly American voice, for his painterly rendering of modern urban settings, and for his ability to re-imagine a living language shaped by the philosophy of “no ideas but in things,” William Carlos Williams (1883-1963) left an indelible mark on modern poetry. As each successive generation of poets discovers the “new” that lives within his work, his durability and expansiveness make him an influential poet for the twenty-first century as well. The one hundred and two poems by one hundred and two poets collected in Visiting Dr. Williams demonstrate the range of his influence in ways that permanently echo and amplify the transcendent music of his language. Contributors include: Robert Creeley, David Wojahn, Maxine Kumin, James Laughlin, A. R. Ammons, Wendell Berry, Heid Erdrich, Frank O’Hara, Lyn Lifshin, Denise Levertov, Wallace Stevens, John Ashbery, Allen Ginsberg, and a host of others.

Cartoonist and doctor Ian Williams introduces us to the troubled life of Dr Iwan James, as all humanity, it seems, passes through his surgery door. Incontinent old ladies, men with eagle tattoos, traumatised widowers - Iwan's patients cause him both empathy and dismay, as he tries to do his best in a world of limited time and budgetary constraints, and in which there are no easy answers. His feelings for his partners also cause him grief: something more than friendship for the sympathetic Dr Lois Pritchard, and not a little frustration at the prankish and obstructive Dr Robert Smith. Iwan's cycling trips with his friend Arthur provide some welcome relief, but even the landscape is imbued with his patients' distress. As we explore the phantoms from Iwan's past, we too begin to feel compassion for The Bad Doctor, and ask what is the dividing line between patient and provider? Wry, comic, graphic, from the humdrum to the tragic, his patients' stories are the spokes that make Iwan's wheels go round in this humane and eloquently drawn account of a doctor's life.

Dr. Cliff Williams was born in Yazoo City, Mississippi. At age eighteen months, he was stricken with polio. He had corrective surgery when he was about five years old. Dr Williams attended St. Francis Elementary and High School, Yazoo City, Mississippi. After high school, he had the second surgery on his right foot and later was fitted with a leg brace. The next year he had the third surgery again on the right foot. He kept the faith and attended Mississippi Vocational College, Itta Bena, Mississippi, where he earned the bachelor of science degree in business education. Later, he attended the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio, where he earned the masters degree in business education. He also earned the doctorate degree in business education with a cognate area in Organizational Behavior Management at the University of Houston, Houston, Texas. Dr. Williams spent one year in St. Louis, Missouri, and worked as a teletype operator for the Third District Police Department. He returned to Mississippi and taught school at OBannon High School, Greenville, Mississippi, for two years. After the last year at OBannon, he accepted a position to teach business subjects at Mississippi Valley State University, Itta Bena, Mississippi. He was employed there for thirty-five years. During this time, he was married to Ms. Catherine Williams and he is the father of two children. Tragedy struck in his life as his brother-in-law was killed, gangland style, in Chicago, Illinois. Another brother-in-law was killed during a robbery, while he was working in a convenience store in Houston, Texas. Later, his auntie died from emphysema, and his father had a fatal heart attack. All of this occurred within a span of two years. He had gotten numerous articles published in the Clarion Ledger, a Jackson, Mississippi based newspaper and had published a book. Dr. Williams retired in 1999 and since has served on numerous boards. He also served as vice president of the Mississippi Valley State Alumni Association, Humphreys County chapter and is currently serving as the vice president of the Retired Education Personnel Association, Humphreys County Chapter. They went to San Diego and visited other cities such as Lake Elsinore, Alpine, Los Angeles, and Escondido. They stayed at the Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido, California. While there, they went to Mexico. A trip to Phoenix, Arizona, resulted in a trip to Old Town and the Titan Missel Silo. On a tour they saw George McGoverns home and the home of Paul Harvey. One year, they went to Little Rock, Arkansas, and got a chance to visit the Bill Clinton Library. Another noticeable trip was the one to Orlando, Florida. They visited the Believe It Or Not! Museum, Universal Studios, Epcot Center, and Sea World.

Not only for students and doctors, this volume contains Williams's thirteen "doctor stories," several of his most famous poems on medical matters, and "The Practice" from The Autobiography. These writings, together with Dr. Robert Coles's enthusiastic appraisal of teaching Williams and Dr. William Eric Williams's personal and touching filial account, "My Father, the Doctor," make up an intriguing and timely study of the poet as a physician of rare humanity and self-knowledge. As Coles suggests, Dr. Williams's writing can help many others take a knowing look at the medical profession.

'How to tell the story of a 500-page collection of stories spanning more than forty years? Especially when I really want to just exclaim, "Oh, Oh, OH!" in a state of steadily mounting rapture' Geoff Dyer, Observer Williams' uniquely devastating portrayals of modern life have been captivating readers and writers for decades. Here, for the first time, Williams' thirty-three best stories are available in a single volume, together with thirteen new stories that show a writer continuing to mould the form into something strange and new. Bleak but funny, real but surreal, domestic but dangerous, familiar but enigmatic, Joy Williams' stories fray away the fabric at the edge of ordinary experience to reveal the loneliness at the heart of human life. In 'The Lover', a girl suffers a spiritual and physical wasting away; in 'The Visiting Privilege', a visitor finds refuge in her friend's psychiatric ward; in 'Charity', a woman gives a poor family gas money and finds herself marooned in their peculiar world; in 'Another Season' an itinerant man cleanses an island of roadkill; in 'Craving' an alcoholic couple head towards a car crash. The Visiting Privilege represents the culmination of Williams' career and cements her place as the most singular artist of short fiction writing today.
