Kurz nach seiner Geburt zog die Familie nach Mixcoac, ein Dorf in Nähe von Mexiko-Stadt. Ireno Paz, sein Großvater väterlicherseits, war Journalist und Autor und beeinflusste Paz schon in seiner Kindheit. Er besaß eine große Bibliothek, die dem jugendlichen Paz oft als Rückzugsmöglichkeit diente. Hier machte sich Paz sowohl mit der mexikanischen als auch mit der europäischen Literatur vertraut und entdeckte seine Begeisterung für die Poesie und Lyrik. Ein weiterer Grund, warum Paz viel Zeit in der Bibliothek verbrachte, wird durch folgendes Zitat deutlich: "Hijo unico, Paz tuvo mucho tiempo para estar solo." [1] Das Verhältnis zu seinem Vater, der als Sekretär für Emilio Zapata arbeitete, beschreibt Paz als nicht sehr gut: "Yo nunca pude hablar con él."[2] Die Familie lebt nach dessen Sturz kurzeitig im Exil in Amerika. Als junger Mann beginnt Paz, in französische und englische Literatur in Originalsprache zu lesen. Er besucht eine französische und eine englische Schule, in der er auch den Umgang mit der Sprache lernt, "decir con palabras claras las verdades oscuras."[3] Paz studiert ab 1931 in der Universität Escuela Nacional Preparatoria San Ildefonso Jura und Literatur. Er wird von seinem Dozenten José Luis Martínez folgendermaßen beschrieben: "inquieto, vivaz, lector infatigable y dueño de una dilatada curiosidad."[4] 1932 gibt Paz mit Freunden die Zeitschrift Barandal heraus, in der er seine ersten Gedichte veröffentlicht. Er lernt Luis Cernuda, Antonio Machado und Xavier Villaurruptia kennen, die ihm den Surrealismus, unterschiedliche Denkweisen und die modere französischen Poesie näher bringen. Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Romanistik - Lateinamerikanische Philologie, Note: 1,0, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (Institut für Romanistik), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Es dürfte heute keinen Schriftsteller spanischer Zunge geben, der es verstanden hat, in seinem Werk eine solche Vielfalt von Erfahrungen zu vereinigen wie Octavio Paz: Als Pilger zu fremden Kulturen hat er ein umfangreiches, dichtes Werk geschaffen, das Bindungen und Trennungen, Begegnungen, Gegenüberstellungen, Symbiosen, wiedergefundene Einheit und früh behauptete Mannigfaltigkeit der Kulturen spiegelt (Carlos Fuentes, zit. von C. Heupel 1979: 277). Dieses Zitat von Carlos Fuentes über Octavio Paz zeigt, dass Paz als ein Schriftsteller angesehen wird, der sich eingehend mit seiner eigenen wie mit fremden Kulturen beschäftigte und eine besondere Gabe besaß, diese zu verstehen und in seinen vielfältigen Werken zu betrachten. Auch wenn Paz große Teile seines Lebens im Ausland verbrachte, positionierte er sich, wie beispielsweise in seiner Nobelpreisrede mit dem Titel „La búsqueda del presente“ 1990, eindeutig als mexikanischer Schriftsteller und behandelt in dem 1950 veröffentlichten El laberinto de la Soledad1 das Selbstverständnis der Mexikaner und deren Geschichte. Bei dem Werk handelt sich aber nicht um eine Aneinanderreihung von geschichtlichen Fakten; Paz beschäftigte sich vielmehr mit grundsätzlichen Fragen nach dem Fundament der mexikanischen Gesellschaft, deren Veränderungen im Laufe der Zeit und der Suche nach einer philosophischen Untermauerung ihrer Nation. Ein ähnliches Werk veröffentliche er mit Vislumbres de la India2 1995 über die indische Nation, mit der er sich während seiner Tätigkeiten als Diplomat in den 60ern ausgiebig beschäftigte. Angesichts der Komplexität der indischen Geschichte, dem Nebeneinander verschiedener Religionen, Ethnien und Sprachen stellt sich die Frage, inwieweit ein ‚westlich’ geprägter Ausländer wirklich in die indische Kultur eintauchen kann. Auch wenn beide Länder kulturell wie geographisch weit voneinander entfernt zu sein scheinen, stehen Mexiko und Indien heute oft vor ähnlichen Problemen, derer sie kaum Herr werden, wie beispielsweise eine extrem gespaltene Gesellschaft, ein Nebeneinander von Reichtum und Armut oder eine nach wie vor aktuelle Suche nach einer Identität im nationalen wie im globalen Kontext.

Octavio Paz (México, 1914–1998) was one of the foremost poets and essayists of the twentieth century.
