This book critically engages with the visual appearance of prose fiction where it is manipulated by authors, from alterations in typography to the deconstruction of the physical form of the book. Damit wird das Erzählen selbst sowie die Fiktionsbildung ins Zentrum gerückt, aber auch die Textualität und Medialität fiktionaler Prosa werden autoreflexiv thematisiert. Die Offenlegung narrativer Illusionsbildung unterminiert dabei auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise scheinbar feste Zuschreibungen in der Erzähltheorie – wie Erzählinstanzen, Erzählebenen, ästhetische Illusion – und führt in extremen Fällen geradezu in ihre Destruktion. Der Sammelband stellt einen ersten Versuch der Bestandsaufnahme des experimentellen Romans im Zeichen der Metafiktion dar. Die Postmoderne ist vorbei. Gleichzeitig erlebt eines ihrer prägenden Erzählverfahren eine kleine Renaissance in der deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsliteratur: die Metafiktion. Ersichtlich wird dies an einigen Beispielen: Wolf Haas' "Verteidigung der Missionarsstellung" (2012), Daniel Kehlmanns "Ruhm" (2009) und Felicitas Hoppes "Hoppe" (2012). Allerdings ist immer noch nicht geklärt, was der Begriff Metafiktion genau umreist. Die Bezeichnung avancierte zum Modewort der Literaturwissenschaften und zum Synonym von Selbstreflexivität aller Art. Häufig bekommen auch visuelle Textphänomene dieses Prädikat verliehen, trotz ihrer unterschiedlichen Funktionsweise. Metatextuelle Romane wie Raymond Federmans "Double or Nothing" (1971), Danielewskis "House of Leaves" (2000) oder Doug Dorsts und J. J. Abrams' "S. Ship of Theseus" 'erzählen' auch durch ihr deviantes visuelles Erscheinungsbild. Solche Texte erleben seit etwa 2000 einen signifikanten Aufschwung – gleichzeitig fehlt ein narratologisches Analyseinstrumentarium fast vollständig. Diese Monografie erarbeitet Definition, Formen und Funktionen von Metafiktion und Metatextualität, indem sie mit der Forschungstradition bricht. Außerdem werden die Erzählverfahren in der Literaturgeschichte verortet.
