The book also describes many of the current visual field instruments, detailing both their strategies and their techniques for analysing perimetric results. There is a comprehensive chapter describing how the visual field is affected by parameters, such as refractive errors and pupil size, with many useful tips as to how these can be controlled and compensated for. Pathologies which affect the visual field are discussed with special chapters devoted to glaucoma and the screening for glaucomatous visual field loss.

Visual Fields: Examination and Interpretation, 3rd edition contains revisions and updates of earlier material as well as a discussion of newer techniques for assessing visual field disorders. The book begins with a short history of the field of perimetry and goes on to present basic clinical aspects of examination and diagnosis of visual field defects in the optic nerve, optic disc, chorioretina, optic chiasm, optic tract, lateral geniculate field bodies, and the calcarine complex. Additional aspects of visual field examination are explored including those of monocular, binocular, and junctional field defects, congruity vs. incongruity, macular sparing vs. macular splitting, density, wedge-shaped homonymous field loss, and monocular temporal crescent. Various new techniques of automated perimetry are also considered including SITA, FASTPAC, and SWAP. A comprehensive survey on the use of bedside skills and perimetric devices to the test visual fields, and how to interpret the results. To develop the clinician's interpretative skills, the authors include a chapter on visual anatomy and an atlas of 100 real-life cases arranged in anatomic order from retina to striate cortex. By placing a brief clinical vignette with a visual field on one side of the page and a description of the field and its causal lesion on the opposite side, the reader will be able to learn interpretation in a simulated clinical setting. An additional quiz section of twenty randomly arranged visual fields provides readers with an opportunity to test their newly acquired skills.

This textbook is a dynamic exploration of the relationship between the visual pathway and visual field impairments. Aimed at the practitioner or student of visual fields, the clinical focus of the book is oriented towards differential diagnosis and will assist the reader in identifying the site of a lesion. The emphasis is on detection and interpretation of visual field defects, rather than the background and psychophysics of visual field assessment. Discussion of the normal visual field is included for comparative purposes. The structure of the book traces the visual pathway anatomically from front to back, and is supplemented by information on methodology and programme choice.

The visual field refers to the total area in which objects can be seen in the side (peripheral) vision when the eyes are focused on a central point. Glaucoma is a condition of the eye in which the optic nerve is damaged due to increased fluid pressure in the eye. If untreated or uncontrolled, glaucoma first causes peripheral vision loss and eventually can lead to blindness. A visual field test is a method of measuring an individual's entire scope of vision, that is their central and peripheral (side) vision. The test is most frequently used to help detect glaucoma but may also be used for detection of central or peripheral diseases of the retina, eyelid conditions such as drooping (ptosis), optic nerve damage and disease, and conditions affecting the visual pathways from the optic nerve to the area of the brain (occipital cortex) where this information is processed into vision. The fourth edition of this comprehensive text provides ophthalmologists and trainees with a guide to the interpretation of visual field tests and subsequent diagnosis and management of ocular disorders. The book has been fully revised and features additional topics including two new classification systems for glaucoma. Nearly 800 clinical photographs and diagrams further enhance learning. Key points Comprehensive guide to interpretation of visual field tests and diagnosis of ocular disorders Fully revised fourth edition featuring many new topics Features nearly 800 clinical photographs and diagrams Previous edition (9788184488661) published in 2008
