Most people who journal use words. But words come from the left brain, which interprets experiences through our learned beliefs and expectations. As this breakthrough book demonstrates, there is a more effective way to journal---using images. Simple drawings, crayon art, even doodles and stick figures can help anyone---even those who believe they "can't draw"---move beyond thought into deep reaches of feeling and intuitive knowing. Barbara Ganim and Susan Fox have developed their Visual Journaling technique into an acclaimed workshop. This book, beautifully illustrated with black and white and color drawings from the journals of students in their workshops, makes this enjoyable tool for personal exploration accessible to everyone. A six-week plan of exercises and interpretive activities teaches readers a lifelong practice that can reduce stress, explore conflicts, and overcome obstacles. Its simple techniques can help everyone gain access to "soul-based" inner wisdom.

Creative Journaling: A Path to Clarity, Expression, and Growth reimagines the humble notebook as a dynamic toolkit for self-discovery and resilience. At its core, the book positions journaling as a bridge between creativity and mental well-being, blending art therapy, mindfulness, and psychology into accessible practices. It challenges the myth that journaling requires artistic skill, offering instead a flexible “process over product” approach. Readers learn techniques like the SPARK method—a five-step system to combat blank-page anxiety—and “micro-journaling,” designed for busy lives. Historical roots, from Marcus Aurelius’ meditations to da Vinci’s sketchbooks, merge with modern science: studies show expressive writing reduces stress while stimulating memory and emotional regulation. The book progresses from theory to action, guiding readers through foundational concepts, hands-on methods (collaging, prompt-based writing), and strategies for sustaining habits. Unique interdisciplinary insights connect clinical research, art therapy case studies, and real-world examples, making it equally valuable for beginners and seasoned journalers. Standout chapters explore collaborative projects, like community art journals, highlighting journaling’s power to foster empathy. Practical appendices with anxiety-management prompts and habit trackers reinforce its utility. By framing journaling as a dialogue with oneself, this guide doesn’t just teach techniques—it invites readers to reshape their inner narratives, offering a compassionate, evidence-backed path to emotional balance and creative renewal.

The project of naturalizing human consciousness/experience has made great technical strides (e.g., in mapping areas of brain activity), but has been hampered in many cases by its uncritical reliance on a dualistic “Cartesian” paradigm (though as some of the authors in the collection point out, assumptions drawn from Plato and from Kant also play a role). The present volume proposes a version of naturalism in aesthetics drawn from American pragmatism (above all from Dewey, but also from James and Peirce)—one primed from the start to see human beings not only as embodied, but as inseparable from the environment they interact with—and provides a forum for authors from diverse disciplines to address specific scientific and philosophical issues within the anti-dualistic framework considering aesthetic experience as a process of embodied meaning-making. Cross-disciplinary contributions come from leading researchers including Mark Johnson, Jim Garrison, Daniel D. Hutto, John T. Haworth, Luca F. Ticini, Beatriz Calvo-Merino. The volume covers pragmatist aesthetics, neuroaesthetics, enactive cognitive science, literary studies, psychology of aesthetics, art and design, sociology.

This is a book for teachers, by teachers, from elementary school to university level classrooms. It is about the use of creative instructional strategies in K-12 classroom settings, and the transformations the teachers made in their journeys from being traditional practitioners to “becoming pedagogical” in their approaches to teaching and learning across the curriculum. Over twenty teachers conducted research in their classrooms on the implementation of creative strategies, tactics, graphics organizers, and visual journals in teaching and learning. They have written their inquiries in a narrative style, informed by various forms of arts based educational research. Their research is approachable and usable by other teachers who are interested in becoming reflective-reflexive practitioners. Many of the strategies, tactics, and graphics organizers are described by Barrie Bennett in his widely used textbook, Beyond Monet: The Artful Science of Instructional Intelligence. However, through their journeys of becoming teacher-learner-researchers, many discovered numerous, creative variations of Bennett’s work as it was implemented in their classrooms. While there are many professional books that provide ideas on collaborative learning and creative teaching approaches, there is very little published research on the efficacy of these concepts in the K-12 classroom. These inquiries provide practical insights into how inspired teachers can conduct research on improving their own practice as well as on greatly improving their students’ learning. Thus, this book has widespread interest for teachers and administrators who seek to implement systemic changes in the ways that teachers teach, and children learn, in the 21st century.
