The Science Of Our Changing Planet written by Tony Juniper and has been published by Dorling Kindersley Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-04 with Science categories.

Understand the science that explains what pressure our planet is under and how to take action. Using powerful, easy-to-grasp graphics, this ebook cuts through the noise and gets straight to the most up-to-date facts on climate change, overpopulation, pollution, over-consumption, pandemics, and much more. Tony Juniper distills wide-ranging, heart-stopping research into one reliable and eye-opening ebook. He charts the dramatic explosion of human population and consumption and its impact on planet Earth, revealing how increasing pressures on our world affect factors such as climate, sea levels, and pollution, and what that means for our future. Global warming has led to sea levels rising over the past 100 years, and the Arctic ice sheet is shrinking at a rate never seen before. Ten million people each year are affected by coastal flooding. One third of all land is at risk of turning to desert, with huge implications for food supplies. Deaths due to air pollution rise every year, and plastic pollution threatens marine life and fishing stocks. As well as explaining global trends and showing how they are connected, The Science of Climate Change explores how we can live more sustainably into the future, with positive ideas of how we can mitigate damaging trends.

This tutorial on the application of the open-source software OpenGeoSys (OGS) in computational hydrology is based on a one-week training course at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany. It provides general information regarding hydrological and groundwater flow modeling and the pre-processing and step-by-step model setups of a case study with OGS and related components such as the OGS Data Explorer. The tutorial also illustrates the application of pre- and post-processing tools such as ArcGIS and ParaView. This book is intended primarily for graduate students and applied scientists who deal with hydrological-system analysis and hydrological modeling. It is also a valuable source of information for practicing hydrologists wishing to further their understanding of the numerical modeling of coupled hydrological-hydrogeological systems. This tutorial is the first in a series that will present further OGS applications in environmental sciences.

Protest And The State In Eurasia And West Asia written by Ms Priya Singh and has been published by KW Publishers Pvt Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-15 with Political Science categories.

The twenty-first century has witnessed disaffection and protest across Eurasia and West Asia, triggering debates questioning the state of governance as well as looking at a redefinition of the ‘arc of crisis.’ By and large, there have been two major viewpoints, one which emphasises the aspect of ‘failed states’ and the other that focuses on technology as the prime instigator and motivator for the protests. Even as the Arab Uprisings are commonly acknowledged as an upshot of a succession of protests as well as the “colour revolutions” across Eurasia and West Asia, the after effects have been incessant with the Maidan in Ukraine and intermittent protests in Turkey. The causative factors have been as diverse as climate change and its adverse impact, economic inequalities fed by a process of globalisation which caters to certain sections of society, social grievances of marginalised sections who feel politically, socially or culturally deprived and a general failure to address critical issues in an apt way. While the nature of the protests has been as varied as the reaction of authorities to the protest, there has been a tendency to review the replication of the protests across states in the region. The world today is increasingly observing and partaking in local and global acts of protest and solidarity that entail visual, aural, and behavioural articulations by demonstrators as effective ways of making claims, reclaiming spaces, and condemning invasive situations. The volume analyses relations between the state and such protests by exploring the construction of protest movements, and probing the background, nature and specificity of dissent. Protest movements and counter-movements have been examined and analysed. The purpose is to understand and interpret the moments and episodes associated with movements, capturing, disseminating and transmuting the images and symbols of protest. Chapters in the volume enquire about and debate on whether contemporary protesters are consolidating upon and intensifying prior repertoires of dissent.

A Pivotal Moment written by Laurie Ann Mazur and has been published by Island Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-26 with Health & Fitness categories.

Through a series of essays by leading demographers, environmentalists and reproductive health advocates, A Pivotal Moment offers a new perspective on the complex connection between population dynamics and environmental quality. It presents the latest research on the relationship between population growth and climate change, ecosystem health and other environmental issues. It surveys the new demographic landscape—in which population growth rates have fallen, but human numbers continue to increase. It looks back at the lessons learned from half a century of population policy—and forward to propose twenty-first century population policies that are sustainable and just. A Pivotal Moment puts forth the concept of “population justice,” which is inspired by reproductive justice and environmental justice movements. Population justice holds that inequality is a root cause of both rapid population growth and environmental degradation. As the authors in this volume explain, to slow population growth and build a sustainable future, women and men need access to voluntary family planning and other reproductive health services. They need education and employment opportunities, especially for women. Population justice means tackling the deep inequities—both gender and economic—that are associated with rapid population growth and unsustainable resource consumption. Where family planning is available, where couples are confident their children will survive, where girls go to school, where young men and women have economic opportunity—there couples will have healthier and smaller families.
