Music has the universal power to move individuals, peoples and societies. Music is one of the most important signifiers of cultural change. It is also most significant for youth movements and youth cultures. While Islam has a historically and traditionally rich culture of music, religious controversy on the topic of music is still ongoing. Nachdem das aus dem Musikfernsehen bekannte Musikvideo inzwischen eine fast vierzig Jahre dauernde Geschichte vorweist, ist eine zentrale Frage, ob es immer noch gewinnbringend als Produkt einer "Kulturindustrie" lesbar ist. Dieser Band erprobt einen neuen interpretativen Ansatz, der Musikvideos als Produkte eines hybridisierenden, intermedialen und Genregrenzen überschreitenden Diskurses begreift. Während das Musikvideo eine spezifische audiovisuelle Form darstellt, die im Kontext des Musikfernsehens der 1980er erprobt, raffiniert und kommerzialisiert wurde, liegen seine Wurzeln in den audiovisuellen Experimenten von Avantgarde-Künstler*innen des frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts und transportierte damit immer auch ein ästhetisch subversives Moment. Dieses Moment kommt in seiner Fähigkeit zum Ausdruck, sich in bestehende Diskurse einzuklinken, diese zu ästhetisieren und umzudeuten. Das Musikvideo ist zum einen an einer popkulturellen Umdeutung des Alltags beteiligt, zum anderen kommen in ihm häufig wieder Bezüge zu künstlerischen und avantgardistischen Produktionsweisen zum Vorschein, die dadurch popularisiert werden. Diese bisher wenig erforschte Perspektive auf das Musikvideo soll in diesem Band untersucht werden.

In this book, native popular musicologists focus on their own popular music cultures from Germany, Austria and Switzerland for the first time: from subcultural to mainstream phenomena; from the 1950s to contemporary acts. Starting with an introduction and two chapters on the histories of German popular music and its study, the volume then concentrates on focused, detailed and yet concise close readings from different perspectives (including particular historical East and West German perspectives), mostly focusing on the music and its protagonists. There are additional chapters on characteristically German developments within music media, journalism and the music industry. The book will contribute to a better understanding of German, Austrian and Swiss popular music, and will interconnect international and especially Anglo-American studies with German approaches. The book, as a consequence, will show close connections between global and local popular music cultures and diverse traditions of study.
