Berlin before the fall of the Wall is a city divided, yet its ordinary residents find ways to live and survive on both sides. There is Robert, teller of bar room anecdotes over beer and vodka, adjusting to a new life in the west; Pommerer, trying to outwit the system in the east; the unnamed narrator, who 'escapes' back-and-forth to collect stories; his beguiling, exiled lover Lena; the three boys who defect to watch Hollywood films; and the man who leaps across the Wall again and again - simply because he cannot help himself. All are, in their different ways, wall jumpers, trying to lose themselves but still trapped wherever they go. Ultimately, the walls inside their heads prove to be more powerful than any man-made barrier . . .

Unfinished at Puccini's death in 1924, Turandot was not only his most ambitious work, but it became the last Italian opera to enter the international repertory. In this colorful study two renowned music scholars demonstrate that this work, despite the modern climate in which it was written, was a fitting finale for the centuries-old Great Tradition of Italian opera. Here they provide concrete instances of how a listener might encounter the dramatic and musical structures of Turandot in light of the Italian melodramma, and firmly establish Puccini's last work within the tradition of Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi. In a summary of the sounds, sights, and symbolism of Turandot, the authors touch on earlier treatments of the subject, outline the conception, birth, and reception of the work, and analyze its coordinated dramatic and musical design. Showing how the evolution of the libretto documents Puccini's reversion to large musical forms typical of the Great Tradition in the late nineteenth century, they give particular attention to his use of contrasting Romantic, modernist, and two kinds of orientalist coloration in the general musical structure. They suggest that Puccini's inability to complete the opera resulted mainly from inadequate dramatic buildup for Turandot's last-minute change of heart combined with an overly successful treatment of the secondary character.

One morning he went out for a walk beyond the town limits to excogitate the final touches for some sentences that were to annihilate the infidel Frenchman. Suddenly he fell prey to a disquiet that almost amounted to physical distress. He turned over in his mind the life he had been leading for the last three months. It had grown wearisomely familiar—the morning walks into the country, the evenings spent in gambling for petty stakes with the reputed Baron Perotti and the latter’s pock-marked mistress. He thought of the affection lavished upon himself by his hostess, a woman ardent but no longer young. He thought of how he had passed his time over the writings of Voltaire and over the composition of an audacious rejoinder which until that moment had seemed to him by no means inadequate. Yet now, in the dulcet atmosphere of a morning in late summer, all these things appeared stupid and repulsive.

Giacomo Casanova was an ecclesiastic, writer, soldier, spy, and diplomat, but above all remains, after two hundred years, the archetypal elegant libertine. Expelled from the church for improper behavior, his amorous adventures and luxurious lifestyle made him into a universal symbol for decadence. This is the first popular account of the man for some years with all the ingredients of good popular biography -- sex, scandal, imprisonment, drama, and love.

"The House of Dust: A Symphony" by Conrad Aiken is a modernist poetic work that explores themes of love, loss, and the transitory nature of life. Published in 1920, Aiken's "The House of Dust" is considered one of the pioneering examples of American modernist poetry. The poem is structured as a symphony, consisting of four movements, each exploring different aspects of the human experience. Aiken employs vivid and often surreal imagery to convey the complexities of emotions and the human psyche. The overarching metaphor of the "House of Dust" suggests the impermanence and fragility of existence. Throughout the symphony, readers may encounter a series of fragmented and abstract images that contribute to the overall impressionistic quality of the work. Aiken's language is characterized by its musicality and rhythm, reflecting the influence of modernist trends in literature during the early 20th century. "The House of Dust" is celebrated for its innovative use of language, form, and symbolism. It invites readers to engage with its evocative verses, challenging them to interpret and derive meaning from the interplay of images and themes. Immerse yourself in the complex and atmospheric world of Conrad Aiken's "The House of Dust" for a unique and thought-provoking poetic experience.
